I've tried measuring & plotting hand span and height. They work in pairs measuring. Then showed them a photo of my hand, palm to palm with a man I met in a pub (I don't always tell them where I met him!), who had huge hands and asked them to estimate his height using lobf. Lively lesson, but good.

Only if they enjoy reading historical maths books! I'm a teacher and what I love about this is the reference to student's general attitudes to maths and how we can cultivate a positive attitude.
