We can't afford to be so reliant on fossil fuels.

Trump's War has proven that beyond any doubt.

On a windswept House of Comons Terrace, I welcomed some of the actions the Labour Government announced today to accelerate the transition to cheap, green energy.

Record number of homes in Great Britain turn to green energy as fuel prices soar Iran war drives demand for solar panels, heat pumps and EVs, with energy bills expected to rise 18% from July

Heat pump orders up 2x in a month. Solar panel inquiries up 250%. EV leases up 85%.

The Iran crisis has made energy security feel personal.
I understand why: I have solar panels, a heat pump & EV on a flexible tariff. When gas prices spike, my bills barely move.

Writing for a new pamphlet entitled "Common Endeavour", Andrew Lewin MP's essay argues that changing times warrant a re-examination of Britain’s relationship with the EU.

We are not the country of 2016 anymore. Our future is European.

This is about more than the technicalities of a UK/Swiss style deal.

I believe it falls on this generation of Labour MPs, and this Labour
government to rebuild our alliances and reimagine what is
possible in our relationship with the EU.

Group of Labour MPs proposes new policies to beat rightwing populism Policies include a Swiss-style EU deal, lower electricity prices and reduced dependence on the US

2/3 Thank you to @jessicaelgot.bsky.social for covering.

As Jess says, my essay looks at the UK/EU relationship.

Immigration is falling sharply & 2026 is very different to 2024.
The case for a Swiss style access to the single market becomes stronger each day.

Proud to have worked with brilliant colleagues on this collection of essays.

With populism rising, the global order shifting and the affordability crisis deepening - the stakes are high.

We set out our ideas for how the Labour Government can meet the moment.

President Trump has had at least 3 positions on the Strait.
First, he wasn't interested in it as the US, 'didn't need it.'
Second, a 'joint venture' with Iran was on the table. Now, a blockade.
In the Commons, I called this out and thanked our PM for spending his time on diplomacy, not social media.

Britain breaks solar energy record twice as UK’s biggest solar farm gets approval Record high set on Monday and raised on Tuesday, with 14.4GW of electricity generated in sunny spring weather

A single line in this piece just made my day:

“The electricity system operator is understood to be preparing to run the grid without any gas for short periods as soon as this summer, in a first for the UK energy system.”

Renewables *work*. And progress matters🎉

The 25th large scale clean power project approved by our Labour Government.

When they are all operational, they will power upto 12.5 million homes.

Whatever happens, this will be one of the legacies of this government. A renewable energy revolution.

A really high quality scheme in WGC.
Homes are EPC B or EPC A and there are EV charging points too.

Doing everything we can to keep our council Labour led - so we can keep delivering schemes like this.

UK greenhouse gas emissions are now down 54% since 1990. They fell 2% last year.

It's something the country doesn't boast about enough. Yes, some of it is switch from industry to services. But the biggest reductions are from changes to electricity supply.

Record wind output helps shield the UK from worst of Iran war fallout Record output from wind farms has helped boost total clean power supplies in the United Kingdom to new highs so far in 2026, and allowed power firms to pare use of fossil fuels to multi-year lows.

"With several other European nations reeling from the fresh surge in oil and gas costs, the UK's wind-heavy power system may act as a blueprint for other countries also seeking to reduce fossil fuel exposure".
