โOpenAI argued its AI models didnโt store/copy specific training data but, rather, reflected what they learned based on the entire training data set. Since the output was generated as a result of user inputs (prompts), it wasnโt the defendants, but the respective user who would be liable for it.โ

Black and gray poster for talk by Kauna Malgwi on the hidden cost of AI.
For those in Atlanta, TIME 100 in AI honoree and mental health activist Kauna Malgwi will be gracing us with her presence at Georgia Tech tomorrow as part of our @aiainetwork.bsky.social Distinguished Speaker Series / IPaT Brown Bag crossover event. Info here: research.gatech.edu/ipat/fall-20...
She now fights, along with other African tech workers, for the right to fair wages, safer working conditions, and trauma-informed mental health care.
Lunch will be provided.
Malgwi is a clinical psychologist, trauma survivor, and advocate for the mental health and rights of digital workers, whose journey began when she worked as a Facebook content moderator, where she was constantly exposed to graphic and violent content.
Are you interested in AIโs hidden costs especially from the point of view of African content moderators?
Join next week Friday at Emory PAIS 561 at 11:30 am for a student open discussion with Time100AI and BBC100 women honoree Kauna Malgwi.

"Today, AI advocates do not merely assume automation is necessary; they aggressively proselytize their faith, thereby paving the way for techno-fascism."

Featuring a conversation with Drs. Carl DiSalvo, Lauren Klein, Brandeis Marshall, and Dan Sinykin, and a roundtable with our 2024โ25 Seed Grant Awardees moderated by Dr. Andrรฉ Brock.
See you there!
With both crypto and AI, there are humans involved at every level of the stack. Narratives of automation make it seem like the process is merely mechanical, but if there are humans involved, there are points for regulatory intervention (and in this case, humans who may need legal protections)
This is not actually how copyright law works. I don't need to opt out, copyright is automatic and you can't just use* my stuff without asking
But it *is* how the UK government is proposing to change the law, to benefit AI firms instead of creatives
*For a given, currently debated, meaning of "use"
I wrote a thing for the AIAI Network monthly newsletter
