Some fun and cute games on sale! I'm going to grab Crowtel Renovations, because that's the only one I don't have yet. 🐦⬛
There weren't any specific skips designed in, but a lot of Spelunky's design is based around fundamental, shared rulesets that you hope people will be able to exploit this way.
Teaser for my new card game with @scorpionmasque.bsky.social, @wellmaus.bsky.social, and Christian Kudahl.
(This is the one where every card is procedurally generated!)

Thank you, John and Graeme and everyone at 8-4 for all your hard work on this Japanese release!
For UFO 50 players on Nintendo Switch, the latest update (v1.9), which adds Japanese, also includes a number of fixes and optimizations for existing players.
The notes for Steam Patch v1.8.35 also cover the majority of these improvements on Switch:

INCREDIBLE, "IMPOSSIBLE" #Spelunky2 RUN by Nokduro.
The level of resourcefulness (and number of close calls) demonstrated here is off the charts. In Low% every bomb, rope, and hit is a monumental event.
Nokduro, you are a legend among legends! ✨
Thank you XanaGear for expertly breaking this down!

Aw, another Little Buddy! ❤️🏠
To me, a classic arcade game which has score can feel more open than one of these heavily-guideposted "open world" games. By and large, score in arcade games sits in the corner of the screen like the sun or moon. It provides warmth and light and direction but isn't there FOR you like a checklist is.
It's interesting, because I think in general games are actually moving more and more towards NOT telling players what to desire... but are doing so in a way that feels (to me) guideposted and artificial. E.g. the "open world" game with a million collectibles, checklists, maps, hints, markers, etc.
Phantasy Star II celebrates its 37th anniversary today, and we have two great interviews covering its development. This one comes from The World of Phantasy Star; my favorite detail is how the fiendishly complex dungeons were the result of a tryharding new employee. shmuplations.com/phantasystar...
This is cool: extremely well-drawn comic about the fighting game community.
My physical copy of Animal Well arrived this week, so excited to see it! @mossmouth.bsky.social did a fantastic job with the cover art, it’s a beauty!

Yasushi Nirasawa - one of the GOATs of monster design!
So many of his monsters are cool head-to-toe, but he could also turn silly ideas, like this watermelon monster, into solid gold with inventive thematic design and asymmetry. Even common decorations like skulls could feel new in his hands.
I believe the game is made in RPG Maker, so that makes sense!
"Light RPG elements and resource management spice up the brain-stretching core gameplay of this unique 'logic puzzle roguelite', where you have to figure out which treasure chests are lying Mimics."

Good morning! I wrote a book! @flantz.bsky.social called it “the definitive history of procedural generation in video games” which is just about the best thing that can happen to a book. Tell your friends, enemies and book-loving acquaintances!
