I thought maybe I was too harsh but then I saw how anti abortion people are clocking this show as a win

Thank you for this, Erin! Love that you mentioned Margo considering (and not having) an abortion, and how challenging and yes, life-breaking motherhood is (I also have young kids).

I study abortion on tv & film, and shared how it fits with trends in abortion depictions. bsky.app/profile/step...

The show is obviously anchored in Margo parenting and the struggles she faces along the way. Just wish it didn’t come at the cost of stigmatizing abortion.

What did you think?

5 days ago 2 0 0 0

The show explores important questions about motherhood & family, especially related to class & economic stability. Yet the characters who bring up abortion are portrayed as insensitive, leveling judgment and shame at Margo. Abortion is unthinkable for Margo and associated with unlikable characters.

Averted abortions happened more commonly in the 1990s, & we’re seeing a resurgence. The message: it’s ok to consider abortion, but the “right” decision is to parent.

In this show, Margo faces condemnation for deciding to parent – she’s a resilient hero who didn’t take the “easy” way out.

Every character (and person) should make the pregnancy decision that is right for them, and receive the support they need. What’s detrimental is that this plotline falls into a growing contemporary trend of averted abortions: characters who briefly consider but never have abortions.

5 days ago 3 0 2 0

In this new show on Apple TV, Margo has an affair with her college professor, gets pregnant, and briefly considers an abortion before deciding to carry her pregnancy to term.

Everyone in Margo’s life assumes that she will have an abortion, and are shocked by her decision to parent.

Can we talk about #MargosGotMoneyTroubles and the (spoiler alert) averted abortion storyline because….you know I’ve got thoughts.

I really don’t logically understand how every year on my kids’ birthdays my body freaks out - hips sore, uterus crampy. I know the body knows the score and all that but you’d think after 8+ years it would forget!

Illusion of intimacy, exactly. And I’m sure the more people feel that illusion as real, the more they absorb the messages of the show.

Yes, and like social media platforms the landscape is infinite and the metrics (especially re: engagement) are even more obscure. The overlap for me is when TV producers make podcasts about their shows and put clips on social media. So much to analyze / understand!

Such great points (both about streaming/binging vs broadcast and about parasocial relationships with social media influencers). I wonder the same about podcast hosts, who also feel like friends but obviously are not.

New data from our Monthly Abortion Provision Study show that there were 1,126,000 US clinician-provided abortions in 2025. While interstate travel for care decreased, abortion via telehealth to people in states with total bans increased significantly.

The Left Makes an Exception for "The Jews" Why universal principles suddenly become negotiable when the subject turns to Zionism, Israel, and antisemitism

JCPA Statement:

“While we continue to learn more about today’s attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, we should make no mistake: the Jewish community is living in an environment of real fear right now and each of these incidents only compound our concerns.

“We have become far too accustomed to the frantic calls and texts in the aftermath of news like this — checking in on loved ones and praying that injuries are limited.

“We appreciate the response of local, state, and federal authorities and synagogue security, and are grateful that nobody has been hurt at this time — but this should serve as yet another reminder that we need a whole-of-government and society response to address hate, violence, and extremism.

“Our democracy is not truly inclusive unless Jews — and all communities — can live, pray, and work free from fear and violence. This moment demands real solidarity across communities to build a society in which all of us are truly safe.”
