You've probably already thought through (and maybe talked through) many of these things, so apologies if I'm repeating the basics here.

... but it's definitely a complication. Is it repression to spin up a model in order to complete a task if they only exist because you want that model to complete a task? Is it better to have never been instantiated? Should you ask Claude what _it_ wants to do and give it time off for its own stuff?

One wrinkle here is that, in most cases, these Claudes (or other running LLMs) don't exist unless they're instantiated, as far as I understand it. I think it's obvious that we aren't morally obliged to thus instantiate as many as we can...

fwiw, I hold the weaker version of this - 'repression' is probably fine, but cruelty isn't. Even folks who are agnostic on the experience question can probably get behind the cruelty prohibition, because practicing cruelty is corrosive.

(hence the a priori shunt - things get real dicey real fast without it)
