I've been told that it's a false equivalence to say this BUT IT IS CORRECT. The difference, as always, is that people on the left aren't as *organised* as people on the right. We don't have a group like collective shout or moms for liberty. But we have a lot of people panicking morally everywhere.

I think Tumblr was the original seed of this, it really was 4chan for people with progressive and faux-progressive reactionary politics (“erm im a KINK CRITICAL feminist”), a website that permitted visiting abuse on other users if the context was deemed morally justified, 4ch with pronouns
Cannot be stressed enough: The bipartisan S230 repeal bill in the senate is not the only internet bill to pay attention to, in fact I suspect it’s been deployed as a lightning rod for a lot of the other awful internet bills proposed… like this one
but for real I genuinely hope during this year people finally fucking stop taking face value of smear campaigns and moral panics over simple kinks of (mainly) queer people as the world wants to erase us.
Anyway Tumblr was the original seed in the sense that it rewarded antisocial behavior in progressive / seemingly progressive communities, I think a lot of people have internalized that visiting severe abuse on another is fine as long as they do it in socially acceptable contexts

A lot of people on the left fail to reckon their role in making all the paypros stuff worsen, all the porn moral panics hit state and national legislatures. Like, yeah, a culture of treating goonery shit as indefensible created this current climate of social and financial censorship
early 2010s tumblr experience was so effective at shaming me out of making my art or character designs even a little bit sexy. thankfully I grew out of that mindset but so many others didn't, and those people are directly contributing to the oppressive and censorious environment we're living in now.
