Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Improvements in LM (top) and EM (bottom) of our micro-sam model (finetuned) compared to the default SAM model.

After a long journey, Segment Anything for Microscopy is now published in Nature Methods! We significantly improve SAM for interactive and automatic segmentation in light and electron microscopy and build a user-friendly tool.

I’ve said “right” about 10 separate times this morning in a bid to get myself going. It’s the British person version of repeatedly yanking the starter cord on an old lawnmower.

Bluesky: Revising my PhD thesis, 41 years later.

Just before the holidays, I discovered a paper I had missed (from 25 years ago) that showed that a major interpretation from my dissertation was wrong. I now have things sorted and the results are quite interesting, maybe better than the original.

A great pet peeve of mine is when clothing companies refer to plastic garments as "vegan leather." Throwing a virtuous health halo around a petroleum product is wild. Next it'll be all-natural organic cyanide

Our miRNA story is now in @science.org ! We found a microRNA, not a protein, that finally solved a long-standing evolutionary mystery of wing coloration in butterflies and moths. (1/n)
