My book, The Peristyle, is about a secret, tyrannical, Vodou theocracy on the Southside of Chicago. But beneath all that, it's about “othering” and just how lonely it can be when you start questioning about the way you were raised and the things you're supposed to believe

It took over 10 years, and 7.5 drafts to get The Peristyle on submission. When you work on project for that long, it becomes a kind of diary. A log of all the “me's” I've been from draft 1 to now. Some of the darlings I've refused to kill are pieces of an old "me" worth honoring
