In Red Desert, when Giuliana walks against the flow of the striking factory workers, the image recalls a pivotal scene in Agnès Varda’s Cléo from 5 to 7. Cléo’s path intersects with a stream of pedestrians – they are almost like a funeral procession, resonating with her thoughts of mortality.
