This Friday (3/27) at 3pm Eastern, I'm going to have @leshner.bsky.social on the channel! Connor is a SUPER cool psychologist who'll be sharing some of his work on parasocial relationships with fictional characters, and doing a Q&A with chat!
Hope to see you there!

Day 9 of saying nice things about biology

I can think of nothing that illustrates the molecular nature of life better than the Punnett Square! While most traits are non-Mendelian, this made me realize that the mysteries of life, though complex, were knowable!

Day 8 of saying nice things about biology,

I actually really enjoyed learning biochemistry back in the day. A molecular understanding of biology cannot exclude biochemistry, after all. If you want to know "why molecules be like that" - you gotta deal with chemistry.

Day 7 of saying nice things about biology.

Phage. If they were a work of fiction, you'd give props to the artist for having such a unique, compelling design. Looking at EM images of them is weirder still because these things ACTUALLY exist - hunting bacteria that potentially hunt you.

What you're seeing here: various molecules like glucose and sucrose (tasty sugars) attract bacteria, and some others (like glycine) repel them!

Day 6 of saying nice things about biology.

Chemotaxis is a bit like seeing some closely guarded secret. It's easy to describe movement as "intelligent and motivated", but at the cellular level, movement actually follows some simple rules - follow that scent!

Day 5 of saying nice things about biology

I'm amazed at the extent to which we actually do understand embryonic development. Sure, there's a lot we don't know about what's going on here, but considering the cell fate of every cell in c-elegans has been mapped, I'd say that's a good start.

Day 4 of saying nice things about biology.

Learning that our mitochondria are powered by these weird little turbines in the form of ATP synthase opened my eyes to the fact that beneath the mystery of life is just fancy little legos - molecular machines!

Cancer Stream Teaser:

Did you know that ULTRASOUND is being explored as a potential complementary therapy for breast cancer treatment? Ultrasound has a funny way of interacting with cancer cells, making this a non-invasive, accessible option to combat cancer. We'll talk more about it on Saturday!

Day 3 of saying nice things about biology.

Biology is one of a very few STEM disciplines where it is OK to anthropomorphize concepts (to a limited degree). Every cell, every protein, every gene has its own story, and it's kind of the foundation of my whole channel!

NEXT SATURDAY, 1/10 I'll be streaming 24 hours of Breast Cancer Research to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation! We'll be talking a LOT about cancer biology, from the very basics all the way to the cutting edge stuff scientists are trying to end this disease once and for all!

Even the alphafold color scheme is evocative of the blue blur!

It's not that the other hedgehog genes aren't important, but Sonic hedgehog does SO much during embryonic development. One job that it does is to coordinate the development of the nervous system!

Day 2 of saying nice things about biology.

You may already be aware of the Sonic Hedgehog gene. But there are two other mammalian hedgehog genes: Indian hedgehog and Desert Hedgehog. It was by complete chance that Sonic Hedgehog ended up being the most important of the 3! A plot by robotnik maybe?
