I highly recommend using a service like Backblaze if you want a set and forget automated backup solution.
I go a bit crazy with my backups though, with two cloud options, and mirroring to my NAS and secondary PC on-site.

I knew people who had also made the transition before me and got some small opportunities before eventually applying for some agencies.
For me, I worked with unofficial fan translators many years ago and learned the foundational skills back then with my hobbyist Photoshop skills. However, making the actual transition to professional work was more difficult since there wasn't something like this available at the time.
