The Mathematics of Behaviour: an interdisciplinary school.
Dates: 20-24 July 2026
Location: University of Nottingham.
Workshop theme
Interdisciplinary research requires researchers to first develop a common language for discipline specific terminology. This school will gather experts from various disciplines within behavioural and mathematical sciences, to establish common ground in terminology, map the similarities and differences in challenge perspectives across disciplines, and discuss inclusive environments in interdisciplinary settings.
The confluence of modelling and behavioural expertise will be harnessed to promote structured discussions of the adequacy and required innovation to capture key behaviours in modelling approaches.
The school will feature contributions from across the mathematical sciences, with expertise in incorporating behaviour into the spectrum of modelling approaches (agent-based models, meso-level, macro-level and AI modelling) across epidemiology, energy use and other application areas, to present conventional and emerging methodologies for incorporating human behaviour.
Modelling Behaviour for Global Challenges: Epidemics and Energy Systems
Dates: 10-14 August 2026
Location: University of Nottingham.
Workshop theme
The workshop will focus on mathematical modelling for behaviour, with three main themes: (i) Abstraction of real-world systems into mathematical models: (ii) Societal response to policy; (iii) Data needs.
Much of the workshop will consist of invited and contributed research talks, and we will hold dynamic panel-based discussion sessions around key topics including engagement with government and public communication of modelling.
Another key topic for discussion during the workshop will be the international vision for the research area. This workshop will take a global perspective, seeking to develop a roadmap for how the discipline can develop in the medium- and long-term.
The strong interdisciplinary focus will aptly position workshop attendees to help steer the future development of the maths of human behaviour as a research area (with interdisciplinarity, internationalism and impact at the forefront).
