This is in general.
And many don't realize how different it is from illustration. It's an entirely different skill set that needs to be learned.

in general:
just put ur dpi to 300 and plug in the canvas size u prefer either in px for digital only or inch for printing.
everything above 3000px length is good.
5000px is great if ur pc can do it.
above 8000px if u wanna do smth huge or need the detail.

150dpi is still fine for large prints
My 5000x4000px canvas would result in a 42.33cm x 33.88cm physical size at 300dpi. (Around DIN A3 or DIN A1 at 150dpi)
(π imperial units)
(Btw u can still change dpi or size later on. Only if u change the px it will affect ur drawing)

So If u only work digitally dpi and size (in) doesnβt really matter except for fonts and certain effects.
For print just plug in the size (in or cm) and put the dpi to 300.
300dpi is standard for high quality prints. It will calculate the pixels automatically.

But thatβs personal preference. Would recommend lowest 3000px tho. HD is (1920x1080px) with many phone screens being a lot higher.
DPI only measures how big that would be printed physically measured in length (in).
example: [Dpi = px/in] or [in = px/dpi]
in = 5000px / 300dpi = 16,67inches

For us dots or pixels can be used interchangeably. (It isnβt the same but that isnt that important for us)
Ur canvas is made out of pixels (if u donβt use vectors). Looking pixelated is bc there sent enough of them. So just make it large. Personally I draw on 5000x4000px ...

DPI refers to resolution of physical print media. Dots Per Inch (in). You may also have heard of PPI or Pixel (px) Per Inch.
its so ur printer knows how big to print something. aside from text tools and screen tone effects it doesnt have an affect on your image at all!!! ...

had this thread going on on twitter but thought its prob good to post it here too:
it really surprised and a bit concerned me how many artists didnt know what resolution (DPI) is with many thinking it has something to do with sharpness of an image...
