In October 1888, Gauguin arrived in Arles in southern France, where Vincent van Gogh was already staying. Throughout the autumn, the two artists lived and worked together. In his landscapes from Arles, such as this one, Gauguin depicts nature as decorative fields of colour without any illusion of depth.
