This simple house may help prevent multiple fatal diseases in African children Randomized, controlled trial shows the $8800 design can reduce cases of malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infection

The research “contributes hugely to the critical evidence that a house is a social determinant of health, a factor that is largely overlooked by health practitioners and those involved in building and construction,” adds Bernard Abong’o, an entomologist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute.

Reupping my review of Alex Karp’s embarrassing pamphlet of a book.

Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

These are going to come for the left too. They financially motivated — Macedonian teenager type stuff for the AI era. Scammers profiting off of easily enraged people. MAGA may be more susceptible to ragebait but worth understanding what’s going to happen in 2026 and 2028.

I don't recall any previous transformative technologies that had to be sold to the public so hard. No one in 1999 was going, "Guys. Cell phone? It's coming, whether we like it or not. I think it's important, FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY, to learn about cell phone. So that we're not left behind!!"

If you step back, it is truly extraordinary that so many people went to such great lengths and broke so many conventions and risked their political careers and the only outcome of all these efforts and risks was appointing a washed-up old spinner to an ambassadorial post

Nice coverage by @kakape.bsky.social in @science.org of our preprint, where we present data showing orthopoxviruses, including MPXV, infect duikers, which are popular bushmeat in many mpox endemic regions. Highlights lots more about orthopoxvirus ecology to explore:

Opinion | Trump Said This Policy Would Make Manhattan a ‘Ghost Town.’ He Was Wrong.

“The triumph of congestion pricing also offers a larger reminder: Government, done right, has immense power to improve people’s lives. Many Americans have grown cynical of government […] But the answer cannot be allowing the private market and pursuit of profits to dominate American life.“
