shocked no one has said Ray. Ethan Hawke is very good in his Chet Baker biopic Born to be Blue, but I think in the same way Austin Powers killed Bond movies, Walk Hard kinda killed the biopic

I just heard a line that I think broke the "unfortunately a bar" meter

"We're having sex and the wettest thing is my eyeballs"

Equal parts disgusting as evocative, painfully descriptive and utterly repulsive

Honestly, even taking one scrappy game 3 would make me ecstatic, even if the rest of the series is blood shed

Glad to help! These ones can also be tricky since the diminished chord is not resolving up a half-step

For these ones you can also think of it as a long suspensions to the Emin7 where the voice leading looks like this

F to E
Ab/G# to G
B to B
D to D
E to E

AMS Lecture Series: Indie Rock After Riot Grrrl | Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Join the AMS Lecture Series with Dan Dipiero as he explores the 1980s UK indie scene, where gendered dynamics often overshadowed indie-pop contributions.

My lecture at the rock hall is less than a week away! To get to go home and talk about my favorite bands in this venue, where we used to take field trips, is an actual dream. Please send your musically inclined students/pals/relatives—it's freee

Dim(maj7) is a pretty common harmony in jazz since the maj7th is in the diminished scale... can think of it (F Ab B D E) as a G13b9 (G B D F Ab E). It works well resolving down to the Emin because you can treat the E like a pedal tone

Amazing! and I didn't know you were formerly STL based (and poor one out for the dead homie)! I'm sure there's an old Foxing feature that I should probably check out!

Oh it was nothing too interesting! just navigating the ways @annakornbluh.bsky.social is both heavily inspired by and diverges from Jameson/asking if that does constitute a shift from late/neoliberal to too late/neofuedal capitalism!

Heartbreaking! This scholar prepared a whole lecture on Jameson's Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism only to not even get to it in class

But I think it did a good job of framing a discussion and allowing the students to say "millennials are cringe" which set up a discussion about what does cringe mean and its relationship to coolness, so it succeed it that sense, but I'm not sure that was because of the argument/rhetoric of the book

3 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

And this leads him to make some bizarre claims (e.g., Obama isn't cool).

Some of this may stem from the fact that the class was centered around discussions of coolness so the students were already familiar with many parts of his argument.

We did Ted Gioia's The Birth and Death of the Cool, which I'm not sure I would recommend. It does a decent job of historicizing a shift from coolness back to what he terms a "cult of sincerity" but he seems to be a bit out of touch with the actual aesthetics of millennials

We talked about these shows in my class called "Music and the Politics of Cool" yesterday, arguing they represented the millenial move away from coolness and towards cringe!

Huge thanks to @12tone.nebula.tv for working with me on the video "The Surprising Rhythms of Emo" in support of EmoCon! This video maps the meaning of shifts between half-time, normal-time, and double-time in emo/pop-punk music as they relate to the general suburban discontent of the genres!
