On the 12th day of Christmas, fixes came to me (Family Size VM #10)

On some days, I work on one feature of my NES emulator. On other days, I make smaller fixes all over the codebase, as in this episode.

There's something about the presence of guns in RE1 (and OG RE2) that breaks brains, and 90% of the "problems" people have with them stem from trying to force gun-led solutions/reactions in basically a fancy controller-based point 'n' click adventure. Gun =/= action game!

Saludos

Lots of good search engine tricks in here but one detail that's buried at the end and needs to be at the top: All the tricks work on Duckduckgo too. Why continue rewarding Google for breaking search and spying on you? Use an alternative.

The Super UFO 8 copier displaying long file names

The Super UFO 8 copier displaying long file names

I did what the UFO guys never bothered to do: about a week ago, I read up on how Long File Names (LFN) work on FAT12 floppy storage, and programmed in a display routine for LFNs on my Super UFO8 FDD copier. Much more useful now!

Fun little test shared here - I wonder if the results are impacted by one's monitor calibration? I got all but one correct!

What is an emulator? (Family Size VM #1)
What is an emulator? (Family Size VM #1) YouTube video by Damian Yerrick

I made an NES emulator called Family Size VM in December and January. To kick off a video series about it, I made a 4-minute explainer video about how an emulator can improve the player's experience.

Support Foone Turing ❤️ Become a supporter of Foone Turing today!

so after being bedridden for 16months due to a hernia, I've finally got my surgery!

I'm in a lot of debt from my extended illness and I've not found a job yet, so if you've got a couple dollars, it'd help me get through this last stretch. Thanks so much!

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
