Design Drives Podcast — Ep. 43 - Rob Harrigan Design Making AI tangible with spatial apps, the Eames' host-guest relationship, and why cross-pollination beats specialization every time.

Had a colleague say they listened to an old podcast with me today. First reaction — oh no. What did I say? 🫣

Milan, 2020. Interesting how little has changed — AI ethics, energy consumption, creativity — while being a completely different world.

First 5 years of design: I just wanna make fun beautiful things…

Next 15 years: …I wanna do more than just make stuff - I want to make impact….

Now: I just wanna make fun beautiful things…

Design is design - with a pencil or pixels or AI. Don't confuse your tools with your practice.

Sharpened flint, fire, Figma components - Rob Harrigan Design Product design has undesigned itself into ephemera. A case for creative range, willful making, and embracing the old gods.

Product design has undesigned itself into ephemera.

Design forgot the old gods. My case for getting them back.

Go forth, and fear no evil. Arise, arise, Poster of Vibes! Threads will be posted, Mastadons will be tooted, Bluesky will be sky tweeted. A fediverse posting day! A nerd day!

Also sorry for spam while testing.

Weighing in on an icon or button color in a established design system is not helpful design feedback

Pushing the idea of craft in a overly visual company whiffs entirely on the true expression of product design, interaction.

I recently was promoted to the highest level IC designer at the day job. It feels weird and vain to celebrate yourself but not many folks can claim that at both IBM and JPM. Feeling chuffed.

Testing making some wacky stuff with Claude and the new Framer CMS API to create fediverse `Riffs` that I can send via Claude on my mobile.

Testing out whipping up a quick post from the Claude mobile app that will publish these "Fediverse" published micro blogs. I'm not upset - just testing vibes.

Black and white portrait photograph of Rob Harrigan, Experience Design Lead at JP Morgan Chase, against a textured background with film grain effects. He has short dark hair, is wearing what appears to be a collared shirt, and is looking directly at the camera with a slight smile. The image includes AIGA awards branding in the top left corner and ‘2025 JUROR’ text in the top right corner.

Still not sure they emailed the right Rob Harrigan, but honored to serve alongside these incredible peers as we create the future of design.

Looking forward to celebrating the work that’s defining what craft, design, and creative culture become next.

Artemis 🌙 Painted with gouache and watercolor on Arches watercolor paper.

There are a few more pieces in this series I have been slowly chipping away at. Normally, I’ll wait until everything is sketched out before throwing down color…but I couldn’t wait to get this one finished up last month 🩵

blows dust off social media after forever

Built my first Figma plugin with Claude. My partner creates atmospheric paintings but every alt-text tool described them as “boy with apple.”

6 chaotic hours later I had something that gets the vibe.

My partner makes incredibly lovely things. She is close to releasing her second edition of the Silver Acorn Tarot. So much joy, love, and hand-painted beauty in this humble little package.
