There are a few phrases in education that I really have a problem with. One is "when done well..."
This relativistic and unfalsifiable claim is applied to all sorts of pedagogical interventions, but it hampers criticality and growth.

So pleased to hear your views about merit points. I have felt negative about them for my whole career but thought I was in a minority of one. Always given for meeting basic expectations and most kids don’t care about them. Also impossible to award across a school with any consistency
