Gosh. That’s truly a worrying stat!
I’m just thinking that being the only child not in costume, because your parents bought you a book instead, might do more harm than good from the child’s perspective.
However, I agree that world book day should be about increasing access to books, for all.
I don’t think it’s a zero-sum game. World Book Day is interesting and memorable for kids because they are dressed up as their favourite characters, and their friends are too.
The more children are inspired to read books, the more books they will buy as adults. It’s a win-win, in the long run.

My Dad always maintained that he “hates video games”. But, I remember him in his late twenties/early thirties staying up all night playing Tetris on his janky old PC. They were good times.
