It was, but there were people who genuinely did not understand it was parody. I don't know what to do about that fact.

I love to see The Onion tale over toxic IP like this, but I worry that parody becomes prophecy

I understand that part of what they do is just made good observations through comedy, but "Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'" will haunt me until my dying days

On one hand, 20th century media was rife with "he's clearly the bad guy because he's an immigrant" - from Mortimer Mouse to the code-switching middle eastern characters in the TV series 24, and that needed correcting. However, identifying positively with Joker and Walter White and Thanos seems bad.

When my wife is browsing titles on whatever streaming service is up on the TV, I find myself thinking about the glorification and humanization of villains in early 21st century entertainment.

How was your Campfire? Bezos asked me an hour later, and because I am an honest person, and because I have been a host myself, I decided he would want to know that there had been a problem, but that his team had reacted quickly and been extremely helpful. To be clear, I was in no way blaming him, nor was I shaking down the richest man on Earth. Instead, I was simply offering Bezos, also a husband and father, a brief human connection.

But when I told him what had happened, Bezos looked horrified. He did not say “I’m so sorry.” He did not say “Do you need anything?” Instead, he made a face, and in an instant, an aide came and whisked him away. When presented with the opportunity for empathy, even performative empathy, he chose escape.

These men are no longer human. I don't just mean that they're evil, I mean that they've willingly abandoned the basic rudiments of being human

I am struggling for the correct words to convey to you just how hard the new Nine Inch Nails album goes.
It's a remix collaboration with Boys Noize, and it's a dance-oriented blend of 'studio' recording and the live Coachella performance from Saturday. The singing is strong, the music is slammin'

The covid amnesia shell game happened DESPITE THE DATA, in part bc we never had a reckoning or real memorialization

The *moment* we replace this regime, they will memory-hole everything they did. If we don't keep clear records and then make them into public memory, they'll get away with it.

The Substack No is simple for me:
1. Chooses to pay certain writers.
2. Won't say which writers they pay.
3. Operates on "cut of revenue," so if I buy subscriptions, *I'm* paying their undisclosed beneficiaries.
4. On "free speech": Platforms monetized bigotry but has no problem ousting porn.

This pattern holds a crucial lesson for America’s current moment. As democratic norms erode and elections become increasingly tilted, anti-corruption movements offer what partisan politics cannot: the moral authority to unite society against a rigged system. When traditional opposition fails, these movements succeed because they transcend party lines, mobilizing citizens around a cause larger than any candidate: the fundamental fairness of the system itself.
Research shows that in polarized societies, the most effective opposition doesn’t fight on the traditional left-right battlefield where positions are entrenched. Instead, it creates an entirely new axis of conflict.1 Framing the stakes as clean versus corrupt shifts debate from rigid ideological divisions to a universally resonant moral question: are you on the side of the people or a corrupt elite?

Truth is, Orbán is just the latest in long list of authoritarians to be defeated by anti-corruption politics.

A Democratic landslide is possible if they can credibly take up the anti-corruption mantle. But that can’t happen if voters see them as corrupt and beholden to wealthy donors.

Fresh out of college, I had the fun idea of making Counterstrike skins based on me and my friends, because we played it so often on the LAN in our apartment.

It was novel at first, but very, very quickly became horrifying. Installed and uninstalled within less than an hour.

Have spoken to people who do this, can confirm it is absolutely on purpose, but also it's Amazon's fault. People expect shipping to be free, even though we all know it isn't.

We're literally educating these people about international building code regulations, explaining why we have the size window that we have, and what ADA bathroom dimensions can be, but the only way to get anything done is to give them thousands and thousands of dollars for their god damn stamp. 🙃

This sounds way more upper class than it is. I just need a building permit. We started this fucking process over a year ago, and I still don't have a building permit, because you can't get the plans right, like it's your job to do
