Most fun detail in this @jourdanrodrigue.bsky.social story: TWO NFL teams recently copied open-source code from the same restaurant-ranking app and created a tool to let their GMs rank prospects against each other. www.nytimes.com/athletic/721...

It’s a weird time!
The Team USA flag guys knew they were gonna win. "Walking through the tunnel, the energy between all 12 of us was just like some Dragon Ball Z character stuff. Everyone was over the power of 9,000. We knew we were already in control." (via @bytimgraham.bsky.social) www.nytimes.com/athletic/714...
baseball has two basic modes:
1. grumpy, slow-paced cotillion
2. drama avalanche where it feels like you’ve been kidnapped but in a way you enjoy for some reason

This hurts more than seeing Juan Soto join the Mets.
Okay, not really. But it still sucks.

Delighted that we can platform so many outstanding journalists, and bolster our coverage of D.C. sports, joining @nickijhabvala.bsky.social, @joshrobbins.bsky.social and myself.
Being able to cover D.C. teams more is why I joined @theathletic.com in 2018. Welcome!:

Been meaning to ask
it's genuinely very cool to me to see the world's richest newspaper swoop in immediately after a competitor's mass layoffs to hire some generational talents just because they can.
Eight years ago, The Athletic was the obnoxious villain of the story and the Washington Post was the respected institution that treated its sports reporters so well, not a single one jumped ship.
You normally have to watch WWE to see this sort of extreme change in good guy/bad guy roles.
So that's cool. I'm not gonna make the "you must subscribe" pitch or whatever. But I think D.C. sports fans will find themselves more and more wanting to be subscribers. I think you or anyone should feel free to ask me or anyone questions if you have any
The Athletic is hiring Barry Svrluga, Adam Kilgore, Candace Buckner, Ava Wallace, Spencer Nusbaum and Jason Murray www.nytco.com/press/the-at...

The one thing I think the WaPo really needs more of is staff editorials about the mayor of nyc

The Post's gutting showed us we can't trust a billionaire to do the right thing. If we want local news to survive, we need to help *build and sustain it*.
(Media) SCOOP: Weeks ago, the owner of the Washington City Paper had offered to purchase The Washington Post's sports and local sections, keeping their desks alive.
The Post reporters were laid off and the desks were shut down instead.

“When the Nats won the World Series in 2019, there were no fewer than seven professional outlets that covered the team on a regular basis. For the last few days, that number has been reduced to one: MLB.com.”

Safety Julian Love clutched a Sierra Nevada pale ale and Nick Emmanwori looked at it, puzzled, before being informed it was a drink for old folks. “It really is,” said Love, who turns 28 next month. “It’s all they had left,” Love joked. (via @mikedugar.bsky.social) www.nytimes.com/athletic/703...

Haha how did you find me? I learned of the game from @sarahlarimer.bsky.social and @scottsallen.bsky.social. It was endorsed by @danshanoff.bsky.social and @markcooperjr.bsky.social. It’s awesome
“When somebody says ‘analytics’ on TV, I just run to the bathroom to vomit. We’re relying on some numbers? Really? If you aren’t smart enough and prepared enough to make an educated decision on what to do, then you shouldn’t be there.” Mike Martz! www.nytimes.com/athletic/701...
