The key phrase—“an establishment of religion”—was readily
understandable to founding-era citizens. See District of Columbia v. Heller,
554 U.S. 570, 576–77 (2008) (relying on a phrase’s “[n]ormal meaning . . .
known to ordinary citizens in the founding generation”). The reason is
simple. At the time, establishments were “a familiar institution.”
McConnell, Establishment, supra note 12, at 2107.13 Someone on the streets
of 1789 Boston, reading that phrase, would have instantly thought of the
Church of England, the colonial established churches, or the current state
establishments—in other words, a polity’s official church or religion. Ibid.

Although the colonial establishments became more tolerant of
dissenters as independence approached, their essence remained unchanged.
The original state constitutions reflect as much. Far from rejecting
establishments, many states preserved the core components of their
establishments, such as public financial support for the official church,
regulation of religious institutions, and religious qualifications for civic
participation.36 Most explicit was South Carolina, whose 1778 Constitution
declared that “the Christian Protestant religion” was “the established
religion,” requiring religious societies to subscribe to enumerated articles of
faith to receive legal recognition. S.C. Const. of 1778, art. XXXVIII,
reprinted in Poore, State Constitutions, supra note 36, at 1626.

The Fifth Circuit flatly states that when the First Amendment says Congress may not create an "establishment of religion," it means the Church of England. They then argue the Founders intended states to have their own churches unaffected by the First Amendment (!!!).

New to the idea of adding Alt Text to images? This is the best thread I’ve seen explaining what and why. The basic idea is to write a brief description of any image you post. For people who can’t see the image well and need a text-based option.

If there are folks who would like to design a couple of "FUND OUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARIES" posters, holler at me at niapoetry@gmail.com and please tell me your rate for this. Poster size would be 11 by 17 landscape size.

I need to print some posters for a forthcoming event.

I’m a Muslim High School Student. I Fear Texas’ New Bible-Infused Curriculum. A high school student criticizes Texas’ new reading and language arts elementary school curriculum that encourages teachers to bring Christianity into classrooms.

Just read this (rethinkingschools.org/articles/im-...) today, so the Islamophobia is only likely to escalate! 🙃

It's the most expected come back ever. Cash is immune to server outages. Online pay is great, don't get me wrong but it's a supplement and not a replacement.

A set of four pictures of a brown dog with brown eyes, black nose, floppy ears, and white neck and muzzle with a white stripe between her eyes. Her lips are curled up and stuck in place, so her teeth are bared but not in a threatening way. She looks like she feels awkward (glancing off to her right), taken aback (pulling her head and body back), amused (glancing off to her left), and then mad (looking right at the photographer, her human that insists on taking pictures instead of helping her unstick her lips).

Darth, it’s the 3rd anniversary of the day CJ couldn’t get her lips unstuck after a nap.

Firefox’s New Boss Has a Very Old-School Plan: 'Build a Better Browser' I spoke with Firefox's head, Ajit Varma, about why the company is returning to fundamentals after years of decline.

To win back users, the new Firefox head's plan is deceptively simple: "Build better features, build a better browser, and then people will use it."

I live with my 5 kids in a tent, enduring nights filled with fear. I have a heart valve condition,&their father is injured.
Please look upon them with compassion&mercy,&do not ignore these innocent souls—they desperately need you.
