This co-occurs with a bifurcation of the experiential field into subject and object, knower and known.
Finally, we take a step towards a two-dimensional active inference account of selfing that can explain both the organismic and identified-with self, and the relationship between them.
We show how awakening-focused insight meditation targets the elimination of the identified-with self but not the organismic self.
The identified-with self is shown to be a product of identifying with certain self-related aspects of experience, resulting in their perceptual masking.
With co-authors Aviva Berkovich-Ohana, Yair Dor-Ziderman, @rubenlaukkonen.bsky.social, @matthewsacchet.bsky.social and @kevinberryman.bsky.social, we solve the puzzle by pulling apart two distinct yet conflated notions of selfing.
We call these the 'organismic self' and the 'identified-with self'.
I'm excited to share our preprint: "Selfing without a self: The missing dimension of identification in computational accounts of selfhood"
The puzzle:
How can meditators claim persistent selfless experience without dysfunction when computational accounts claim it's maladaptive? 🧵

📢Maths in the Brain Workshop 2026 in Melbourne.
We will bring together researchers across Australia with a shared interest in understanding the brain from a quantitative perspective.
This year's keynote is delivered by Professor James Cole, University College London.

We're hiring a Program Manager to join the Meditation Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to be in the thick of our efforts. You would work closely with us to drive our current projects forward....

This was a really fun conversation to have, thanks Josh! (www.linkedin.com/in/joshricha/)
Hagar did an excellent job on this and it was really fun to be involved with the project. :) Thanks to Matthew @matthewsacchet.bsky.social , Lars and Malcolm @malcolmnz.bsky.social for all their work in making this happen as well!
A lovely Christmas present: this paper led by Henrik Röhr is now out: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/YCJX8T...
In this paper, we predict on a single-trial level whether someone is practising a self-boundary dissolution meditation practice on the basis of their EEG data

I'm biased, but I think Neuromatch has done a lot of good in helping make computational science education accessible. Please consider donating to help us continue!
Very excited to announce that our new paper “Are Dreams Narrative Experiences? How Assumptions About Fictional Narratives Shape Debates on Dream Experiences” is officially published in Topoi.
I am truly honoured to have collaborated with my supervisor, Jennifer Windt, on this work.

Excited for the Australasian Society for Philosophy and Psychology (ASPP) 2025 Conference next week in Melbourne 24-25 Nov.
I'll be presenting posters on multi-dimensional selfing and affective valence with active inference.
