My visit to the City of Culture was brief but wonderful. 🌟
I won the Mrs Wordsmith raffle, which was a large gift box or resources to support vocabulary and story writing through games and scaffolding. It's beautiful and will be winging its way to a lovely group of students next week.
@amdassu.bsky.social urged us to support children in writing stories they can see themselves in: their family structure, culture, ethnicity, relationships, politics...
Matt Goodfellow urged us to make space in our day for rebellious writing! With no rules, poetry offers children the freedom from rules that stifle their ability to see themselves as writers and allow themselves to be expressive and have fun.
But what if it could be?
Wilko Wilkes shared his work with us in helping all children, particularly young, disadvantaged boys that they are writers and RAP is one of the most liberating forms of poetry. His performance of the A-Z of Depression was fantastic.
I got to hear from the most amazing people, who gathered alongside delegates to raise voices and raise literacy! Maddy Barnes asked are we teaching reading the way we want to (and need to) or the way we have to (to the test). Jeffrey Boakye reminded us 'the world is not bespoke to our needs'...
I attended the @literacy-trust.bsky.social #PriCon25 yesterday, and this converted NY school bus was the most delightful place to hang out. Serving children in Bradford, this story bus delivers intrigue, mystery, adventure, thrills, comedy...a reading space that excites and delights! 💛
With us, you are welcomed into a community that recognises there are no quick fixes or 🪄 for dealing with the complexities schools are navigating. Navigation through challenge and complexity is only made easier by those who share the way.
