Abstract Across four studies (N = 1,427), we examined the impact of identity-safety cues (Black Lives Matter or Pride posters) on marginalized (Black, LGBTQ+) and advantaged (White, cisgender-heterosexual) parents' evaluations of elementary classrooms. Black (Study 1) and LGBTQ+ parents (Studies 2 and 3a) perceived identity-relevant safety cues as more appropriate and as prompting more positive education-related outcomes (child belonging, classroom interest) than advantaged parents, who preferred control classrooms. Effects among cisgender-heterosexual parents were consistent between third- and eighth-grade classrooms (Study 3b); despite expressing less classroom interest in and finding Pride classrooms inappropriate across grades, cisgender-heterosexual parents' expectations of child belonging, child grade, and teacher support did not differ between classrooms. Brief qualitative analyses assessed parents' beliefs on appropriate inclusive imagery and who should educate on diversity-related information. We highlight identity-based disparities in perceptions of educational inclusivity efforts in the context of current movements toward heightened parental control in education.
Ultimately- our findings demonstrate the anticipated harm of “don’t say gay” and anti-CRT laws for marginalized families. We argue age appropriateness is not the real concern of parents given we find evidence of a “moving goal post” with shifting estimates. Read more here: doi.org/10.1177/1948...
Bar graphs showing that lgbtq parents viewed control and ISC classrooms as equally appropriate and report great interest in ISC classrooms. Cis-het parents however viewed ISC classrooms as less appropriate and have less interest in ISC classrooms than control classrooms
Perhaps most concerning, we see that even though dominant parents recognize ISC classrooms would result in more equitable treatment for children of LGBTQ families, they continue to view ISC classrooms as less appropriate (3rd or 8th grade).
ISCs as more appropriate and were more interested in having their children in ISC classrooms than were dominant group parents. The identity safety benefits of ISCs were particularly pronounced for marginalized parents when proposed legislation limiting LGBTQ content in schools was salient. BUT…

I wrote a piece for @sciam.bsky.social about why White parents should be talking to their kids about race and racism. It was so great to work with @megha.bsky.social on this piece! Please share! www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...
Retain their brilliant, marginalized faculty who are actively being censored and attacked just for excelling in their fields
Promoting faculty diversity isn’t just a matter of hiring, but also retention. We outline recommendations for how departments and universities can prepare and ensure their cluster hires thrive. It was always important, but perhaps now more than ever, I hope departments are thinking about how to… 1/2
