Dunleavy's LNG plan trades public revenue for private promises News-Miner opinion: Gov. Mike Dunleavy has made a habit of asking Alaskans to accept less while promising, with unwavering confidence, that something greater lies just over the horizon. His latest

"It’s time for the governor to realize that our resources are vast but our patience is not inexhaustible. At some point, the promise of future riches ceases to justify present-day concessions.

That point has been reached."

Alaska legislators have few firm facts as they consider a proposed trans-Alaska natural gas pipeline | Alaska Beacon Legislators dealing with the pipeline say they don’t have answers to basic questions, like how much the pipeline will cost and whether the gas it carries will be affordable to Alaskans.

Sen. Cathy Giessel, Senate Resources chair, says legislators "have not seen any figures," on the gasline.

Meanwhile Sen Wielechowski says "very credible sources" have reported that gas could cost Alaskans 5X current prices of gas from Cook Inlet.

One of Alaska’s flagship mines soon could draw energy from the sun Red Dog is racing to displace costly diesel with solar power before federal tax credits expire.

Even big industry knows renewable energy works in Alaska and is using solar power to save money. Renewables are the best way to meet our energy needs now and into the future, and they're already working across Alaska.

Big Oil’s War Windfall Americans are paying more at the pump while oil companies profit from the chaos. Congress has a chance to stop the windfall.

"A windfall profits tax is the right response to this crisis, but building clean energy is how we stop having the same crisis over and over again, every few years, whenever the next flashpoint ignites in an oil-rich part of the world."

Reporting From Alaska- 90 percent gas pipeline property tax cut will be a hard sell Glenfarne announced on January 22 that it was shifting from “development into early execution” of the gas pipeline, just in time for two top executives to be applauded that night as guests at Gov. Mik...

Dunleavy + Glenfarne are trying to build political pressure for AK LNG with a 90% property tax cut. Glenfarne claims this is necessary for the project to be economic, but that's unclear, since they won't release details on the economics of the project. More here:

Raising oil, corporate taxes is least-painful option for reducing Alaska deficits, ISER concludes | Alaska Beacon The Institute of Social and Economic Research at UAA analyzed the side effects of taxes and cuts being considered for a state fiscal plan.

Fairly taxing oil companies and closing the S-corp loophole are common sense measures to fix the state budget crisis. These options are also the best for all Alaskans.

If you are interested in being part of more efforts to see our borough move to renewables, respond to the climate crisis, and create a safer Fairbanks for all of us, reach out at bella@fbxclimateaction.org.

Renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency upgrades are a great path for the borough to take to reduce these costs.
Thank you to the borough assembly and administration for making this happen.

Borough debuts facilities energy dashboard The Fairbanks North Star Borough administration provided a snapshot of a new tool that tracks the energy use of borough facilities during an Assembly Finance Commission meeting last week.

The Policy and Politics Working Group was ecstatic to see the introduction of the FNSB energy dashboard debuted last week. It’s clear to see, within the dashboard, that our reliance on fossil fuels over renewable energy is costing our borough and our taxpayers.

A similar pattern emerged in 2024, with oil and gas employment at 1 million juxtaposed against record-setting production. As seen in our chart of the quarter, over the past decade, the U.S. oil and gas industry has experienced a 20% drop in employment

3 months ago 1 0 0 0

Staffing peaked at 1.26 million in 2014, coinciding with sustained high crude oil prices and a boom in oil and gas employment during the early phases of the U.S. fracking boom. But a lower employment peak was reported in 2019 at 1.13 million, even though production levels were higher than in 2014.

The benefits derived from oil and gas employment wages within the U.S. economy are decaying. During the last two market-driven cycles, the oil and gas industry has experienced lower peaks for employment levels compared to the preceding highs.

This graph from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) shows the significant decrease in U.S. oil and gas employment in the last decade.

It makes sense to decrease tax breaks for oil companies when they are investing less in us. (graph description from IEEFA in comments)

The "final decision" on the gasline has been almost here for over 50 years now. Meanwhile, billions have been spent not building a pipeline, and not bringing on any new energy. Don't we think it's about time to move on?
