and that understanding these connections is key to shaping a more sustainable future.
PopEd is the only remaining program of its kind in the United States, preparing educators to teach about human population growth and its effects on the environment and human wellbeing.

We love this interactive chart that attendees help build in real time. It starts simply: More people… then what?
More cars, more cities, more pollution… and ultimately, less clean air, less water, less biodiversity.
It’s a powerful visual reminder that every “more” and “less” is connected,
Population Education (PopEd) , our program, which is geared toward K-12 students, and through outreach to college and university professors and their students was recently at the National Conference on Science Education Anaheim 2026 engaging educators through hands-on learning.
Teen birth rates in the U.S. have been steadily declining largely thanks to fewer unintended pregnancies among young people. It’s a public health win, driven by better access to education and reproductive care.
But will that progress hold?

"Fifty years ago, climate change wasn’t on most people’s radar screens, let alone in school curriculum. We began including activities on global warming in our 1990 high school materials, long before it was a standard topic for the K–12 science classroom.
For decades, @populationeducation.org, a program of Population Connection, has helped students explore the connections between people and the planet. Support this amazing program by doubling your impact for #EarthDay!

We used this platform to highlight:
• The urgent need for reliable demographic data
• Stagnation in access to family planning
• And the risks of fear-driven #pronatalist policies
• The links between population dynamics and the #SDGs
The 59th session of the Commission on Population and Development, #CPD59, has closed without consensus — once again.
A key sticking point remains disagreement over language on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Still, important conversations took place.
The Trump admin has overtly & shamelessly enacted drastic policies to curtail access to abortion & contraception both domestically and internationally. But the MAGA movement is chipping away at reproductive health & rights in covert and devious ways too.

From rejecting the SDGs at last year's #CPD58 to reframing population policy around ‘family values’, the shift is hard to ignore.

The USA doubled down on a #pronatalist, ‘pro-family’ agenda, framing declining fertility as a crisis while sidestepping #reproductiverights.
Population policy isn’t just about birth rates. It’s about choice, equity, and access.

Population × technology × environment
Big shifts. Big questions.
But here’s the concern: investment in research is declining—just when we need it most.

Last year, the United States caused a stir when it said:
“The United States rejects and denounces the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and will no longer reaffirm the SDGs as a matter of course.”
Let’s see what unfolds this year 👀.
We’re on the ground at #CPD59 in New York at the UN headquarters.
This week, global leaders gather to talk population, technology & sustainable development. Follow along for daily updates.

Even though our global population soared past the 8 billion mark in November 2022 and is projected to keep growing to over 10 billion in the 2080s, population coverage in the media is currently dominated by concern about a supposed “baby bust.”

There are nuanced connections between religion, birth control, and fertility. Our compelling article details the pressures on women to bear children, and examples of religious countries with low fertility rates. All have access to a range of affordable modern contraceptive methods!

Today is #WorldHealthDay, with the theme ‘Together for Health, Stand with Science.’ This year’s focus is on #OneHealth, a holistic approach to human health which also considers the health of other species & ecosystems. Here’s what that means & why it’s vital.

Humans are one of the most extreme examples of life transforming Earth. Through #fossilfuel consumption, agriculture, and #pollution, we've altered more layers of the planet in less time than any other species, pushing Earth into a crisis.
