There's a weird specific ache to being a person who loves a place and finds a home in a place and builds community in a place and also knows that because they didn't grow up there, their sense of belonging doesn't really count to a lot of the people in that place.

I totally get why both Atlanta and DC have a reason to be exhausted with outsiders taking up space, each for different reasons.

But I've also seen outsiders build things in both that brought so much to them, in ways that showed their deep love for the place.

I also love DC. It's gay and weird and mad in a way I never expected and has been very healing for me.

I've spent a decade of my life here, trying to build things and make a difference here.

I love this place with my whole heart, as a home. The first home I had for my self.

Fwiw I also love ATL & missed it fiercely after I left but it was, in retrospect, genuinely perhaps the only way for me to survive into adulthood.

Shit sucks. I've been away so long I no longer really feel tied to it. The Atlanta I'm from no longer exists. It's in a whole new era, and good for it.

DC (my current home) and Atlanta (~my home town) both have a real bad case of the "if you're not a native get fucked"

Some folks have very good reason to rehome and I love my current home as fiercely as I've ever loved anywhere.
