You might be able to add a little bleach to it and try to kill the mold. My studio manager used to do so with her porcelain slips.

Drywall is just another type of clay.. right?

Ours started stress peeing and got himself a UTI, doctor put him on Gabapentin. Dunno if yall have tried any anti anxiety meds, but it seemed to help mellow him out enough to get past the box use issues.
