Seriously, WHEREVER you are in the world, I recommend watching all of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s powerful & already famous speech at Davos.
Can’t underestimate its leadership importance.
Key line: “Middle powers must work together, because if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”
Women often internalize workplace discrimination and hostility as being signals of their ineffective communication. “Yellin’ at Yellen” and a study by Dupas et al. showing similar trends in Econ seminars tell us that it’s not about us; it’s about them.

One of the most powerful forces in politics is the urge to destroy that from which you are excluded. This is why, in the highly unequal US, support for Trump holds up even as he trashes everything that makes a good society. Equality is key to preventing fascism.

Very rough and ready estimate of the most affected countries by the new tariffs, apologies for errors. Sources in thread. Cambodia, Vietnam, Nicaragua Guyana all *highly* dependent on exports to US (= to 25%+ GNI), facing tariffs 18-38%.

Thrilled to see our analysis covered in @economist.com! US foreign aid cuts will have a devastating impact on health systems around the world.

The UK is slashing its aid budget, following in US footsteps.
“Rather than rising to this challenge and offering emergency support, the UK is delivering another blow to health systems around the world."

Cutting aid to fund defence, Mr Starmer, is both cruel and self-defeating. I agree we need to defend ourselves. But creating a less stable, less humane world is no way to do it.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer just cut the UK aid budget from 0.5% of GNI to 0.3% in 2027 to fund increases in defence spending.
He says he’s making tough choices, but cutting funding for the world’s poorest people is the easiest—and cruellest—choice he could make (1/4)

(4/4)🏛️ Political will & governance reforms are crucial—technical solutions alone won’t suffice.
✅ Strengthening country capacity and enhancing donor accountability are key next steps.

(3/4) 🌍 Policymakers see potential in the New Compact but question donor commitment.
⛔ Fragmented aid and weak coordination are ongoing challenges.
(2/4) The New Compact is centered on:
🔹 Locally led, evidence-informed priority-setting
🔹 Domestic-first resource allocation
🔹 Consolidated supplementary aid
Key takeaways from the roundtable include...
🏦 Amid rising fiscal pressures, shifting donor priorities, & geopolitical disruptions (eg.US aid cuts), how can countries & donors collaborate to ensure sustainable health financing?

USAID crisis shows the global health golden age has become the age of donor instability.
A New Compact is needed to protect core services:
✅Countries prioritise & finance essential health services.
✅Donors acknowledge instability & top-up national plans.

1/ President Trump is once again pushing for US withdrawal from WHO—and proposing an "alternative" structure. But is this a real solution or just chaos in disguise? A 🧵 on our new piece @bmj.com with @kentbuse.bsky.social @chrischirp.bsky.social & Adeeba Kamarulzaman 👇
