Agree - ComEC has been everybody’s nightmare (even for some of the genetics)…. thus, exciting to see the structure solved 🤩

Structural basis for DNA processing and membrane translocation by ComEC in natural transformation Natural transformation is one of the major pathways of horizontal gene transfer in bacteria, enabling the acquisition of extracellular DNA and its integration into the host genome. ComEC is a membrane...

ComEC structure is out!! 😍
Congratulations to the authors! That’s not an easy one. We have been trying for years to get that structure…
We failed and gave up.

Competence-mediated DNA uptake diversifies Vibrio cholerae sedentary chromosomal integrons Bacteria often survive viral attack and environmental stress by sharing genes that enhance their defenses. The cholera pathogen Vibrio cholerae carries a sedentary chromosomal integron (SCI), a genetic element containing hundreds of mostly promoterless ...

Diversity-generating retroelements for programmable targeted hypermutagenesis - Nature Biotechnology Diversity-generating retroelements are engineered for directed evolution in E.coli.

🔈Paper out! We turned the most fascinating phage host-switch mechanism, diversity-generating retroelements, into a programmable mutagenesis tool, DGRec. You can perform targeted hypermutation of any 50-200bp sequence directly in vivo in E. coli www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The type VI secretion system of Vibrio cholerae fosters horizontal gene transfer A water-borne pathogen seeks out and captures its neighbors’ genes.

Thanks Freddie🙏 🤩
You are not the first one telling me that the paper will be good for teaching 🤓
Unfortunately, no microscopy🔬 this time (in contrast to old T6SS paper).

Amazing work from @fredoleroux.bsky.social lab - serious sampling w/ >1000 phages sequenced.
I love this paper❗So much new biology still to discover from this treasure box of phages +vibrios 🤓
Bin congrats to Freddie, Jeff, Karine et al + their collaborators @epcrocha.bsky.social & team 🎉👏

>1000 lytic vibriophages sequenced. 4 years later… still there. Same genomes. Same vibes. Different story. When nothing changes—but everything does. Congrats to Jeff & Karine et al. and @epcrocha.bsky.social for the intellectual turbulence ;-)

The phage nucleus synergizes with an anti-defense protein to resist bacterial immunity Morgan et al. show that a phage-encoded protein functions as an antitoxin to counter DarTG2-mediated phage defense. They further explore the interplay between this anti-defense protein, the phage nucleus replication compartment, which encloses chimallivirus genomes, and the DarTG2 phage defense system.

Excited to share the last installation of my PhD work. Worked with an all-star team on this one who really made this all come together beautifully. @ranidreamer.bsky.social @amardeeep.bsky.social @benadler.bsky.social and many others. www.cell.com/cell-reports...
