Realigning incentives for biomedical researchers and journals through researcher-shared outputs In this preprint the authors propose a shift in what counts in the biomedical sciences: researchers should be recognized for what they choose to share on their own terms and timeline (for example as p...

Scientific publishing needs to change. HHMI President Erin O'Shea and Bodo Stern argue that the incentives are misaligned. Researchers should be evaluated on what they choose to share, not what journals select. Proud that HHMI @hhmi-science.bsky.social is leading the way. Pre-Print: bit.ly/4sDCCsu

I’m a Nobel Prize-winning immigrant. I can no longer recognize this country. Attacks on science and immigrants are destroying America.

Jack Szostak "All of these things frighten me, and they should frighten you as well. I made the decision to create a life for myself here, because I viewed this as a place that rewarded determination, hard work, and integrity. It still has a chance to be that place again."

Thank you @raniaziar.bsky.social for the evidence 📸 , @kateletai.bsky.social and Carrie Ann for moral support, and Cali for telling the class (other than my own student that showed up late) to not comment on my haircut because I was upset about about it

Can’t believe this April Fools worked on an entire class of PhD students, including one of my own, who laughed when I walked in before I scolded that it isn’t nice to make fun of a haircut no matter how bad it is

Halfway into class I felt bad and took the wig off.. inadvertently got the admins too

So incredibly proud of DOCTOR @kateletai.bsky.social who beautifully defended her PhD yesterday. We rolled in with custom shirts inspired by her 2 time Olympian sister ready to cheer her on in her scientific event.

Can’t wait to follow her journey as she continues to make the world a better place!

Did you know that over 90% of autism risk genes are expressed in the gut nervous system? Our faculty @marissascavuzzo.bsky.social is using ASD donor cells to rebuild the human intestine in a dish to understand why so many individuals with autism experience severe gut issues. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay

An enteric neuron ionotropic receptor regulates salt stress resistance Nature - The I3 pharyngeal enteric neuron in Caenorhabditis elegans detects high-salt conditions, and the GLR-9 ionotropic salt receptor expressed specifically in I3 regulates genes related to salt...

Another paper from our awesome lab out today @nature.com. Led by 🌟 PD Jihye Yeon with fantastic collaborators. We show how an ionotropic receptor (related to insect sensory IRs) in a single pharyngeal enteric neuron senses ingested salts and protects the worm from high salt stress.

Poster for his defense

Today i attended one of the most interesting PhD defenses of my career. JP Flores' (@jpflores.rbind.io) combination of scientific achievement & acumen, activities in mentoring, science communication, & advocacy, & creativity in presentation made it virtually unique--look our for him in the future!

Such a great day in the lab, having a dissertation watch party for @jpflores.rbind.io, good news for one of our trainees (embargoed), and one of my favorite traditions the annual lab egg hunt! The more you experiment or restock, the more eggs you collect. These nerds already found most 👩‍🔬🧪

Or maybe don’t provide me any more coffee so I don’t convince myself to write a third R01

Should be fun though! So much fun and exciting science to do and writing grants feels like daydreaming on paper

I was planning on applying to my first R01 and a DP2 in August which I have heard might be ambitious, so I started mapping out the grants last night.

This morning I woke up with three specific aims pages completely written to apply to two R01s and the DP2. Send vibes and coffee.. going for it

It’s tradition for labs to make the defense posters for the students defending! Huge shoutout to mine for hitting the nail on the head lol. Interested in what I’ve been doing during my PhD (both science and non-science!)? Message me for the Zoom link or come in-person if you’re in the area 😊
