The music hill I’m wiling to die on that a lot of people don’t expect is that the Dave Matthews Band is good, actually.

I may or may not have already gotten the time approved and booked the flights. Which is an absolutely terrifying amount of planning ahead in the year 2026.

Mark it on your calendars, fellow elasmo-nerds! Also if you’re planning on joining in on the bony fish and herpetology sides of JMIH 2026.

U.S. panel votes to exempt Gulf of Mexico drilling from Endangered Species Act In its first meeting in three decades, the Endangered Species Committee voted to revoke protections for the endangered Rice’s whales and sea turtles.

After 15 whole minutes of discussion, the Endangered Species Committee (100% Trump appointees) decided that oil & gas companies in the Gulf of Mexico don't need to exert any caution anymore to protect endangered whales, turtles, or other wildlife.

Psyched to be a co-author on this new paper led by @shannonbarry.bsky.social that uses genetics to prove that North Carolina’s baby bull sharks used to be Florida’s. 🦈🐟🦤🧪🦑

Six bull sharks inadvertently made their home on an Australian golf course. Then they vanished | CNN For golfers, staying out of the water could be the difference between winning and losing. At one course in Australia, it was the difference between life and death.

The Carbrook golf course in Australia legitimately had bull sharks living in one its water hazards for years. www.cnn.com/2023/10/18/s...

Do you have any idea what NOAA could be if it had a $200 billion budget?

The first week of US's war with Iran cost $6 billion, almost the same as the entire annual budget funding all scientific research via NSF

Macro photo of a brown stink bug in face view on a leaf, guarding a tightly-clustered bunch of eggs that are shaped and colored exactly like a full tray of dark beer with foam on top.

Finally, the bug is back with a round of the Guinness.

Warren Buffet also appears to be objectively happier and less of a miserable ghoul desperately begging for accolades on his own social media platform than some the others on this list.

Makes you think.

There are a lot of people who are going to complain about being unfairly vilified by that halftime show and it's because they know in their hearts they're on Team Hate.

Assessing metabolic rate and post‐tagging recovery in juvenile fish Juvenile fish play a crucial role in the health of aquatic ecosystems, serving both as the foundation for future adult populations and as a valuable food source. Studying the juvenile life stage of f...

At work, we often anaesthetise, perform surgery on, and tag juvenile fish. We wanted to find out if these procedures impact their oxygen consumption in the following days. Good news, we didn't find cause for concern! 🙂

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

Decline is not inevitable.

Where fishing mortality has been reduced — through catch limits, retention bans, or spatial protection — shark and ray populations are stabilizing or recovering.

An advantage that Trumpy Republicans have is that it's very difficult to accurately describe what they're doing without sounding like you're a deranged hyper-partisan!

Example:

"They're no longer considering the impact of environmental regulations on saving human lives, only the cost to industry"

'Why aren't they in the streets' is answered almost every day in my small town by people in the streets! Rather than asking 'why aren't they in the streets' it's worth asking 'why isn't your media showing them in the streets' and 'who is served by downplaying resistane in its myriad forms.'

You have to look past the fact that this is an attempt to project confidence and power and see it for what it is: an open admission of weakness and desperation.

Strong people don’t act like this. Weaklings who wish they were strong do.

Recovery of Paleodictyon patterns after simulated mining activity on Pacific nodule fields - Marine Biodiversity Since the late 1980s, various experiments have been conducted in polymetallic nodule fields of the Pacific Ocean to assess the potential environmental impacts of future mining, specifically in two are...

This is one of the wildest deep-sea mining stories to me.

Paleodictyon is a 500-million-year-old trace fossil from an unknown organism. In the last 50 years, we've found their honeycomb traces on the seafloor. There is a living organism that has been doing its thing for half a billion years.

So everyone knows that northern cod collapsed completely in the 1980s and never recovered. Well... it's actually kind of recovering now. Spawning biomass is at pretty good levels, while catches remain at a tiny fraction of the heyday levels.
