In this fascinating article, @dublininquirer.com speaks with @lauragarbes.bsky.social, author of Listeners Like Who?: Exclusion and Resistance in the Public Radio Industry 📻 🇮🇪 🗞️

Of course, glad you enjoyed it too!
I spoke with @shamimmalekmian.bsky.social earlier this week, who wrote a brilliant and well-reported piece about the "accent ceiling" on the radio in Ireland. So many parallels with my findings in the US context!
(D4 accent = a particular Dublin accent associated with wealth, privilege, and yes, whiteness)
Per the article: "Part of the reluctance to hire people with diverse voices might be fears that listeners might push back and complain, said Greene.. That’s why people who don’t exactly have what's perceived to be the standard radio voice gradually shed their real accents and cultivate a D4 one."

For Nieman Reports, I wrote about women-run radio stations around the world, specifically in Afghanistan, Uganda, Syria, and the U.S. niemanreports.org/women-radio-...

Really appreciate this data reporting from the @startribune.com, which comes with the appropriate cautions about the crowd-sourced data. Looks like the ICE/DHS surge in MN is down significantly, but (a) was HUGE compared to other cities, (b) impacted the suburbs A LOT, and (c) is still happening.
Two female ICE agents popped the hood of their car and knocked on the door of a mechanic born in Mexico. He went out to help.

Minnesota still needs your attention
My friends at Niemanreports.org asked me to write about the experience of being a journalist on the ground in Minneapolis right now. I knew I wanted to tell reporters elsewhere how even this most hopeless of times has been clarifying and, in some ways, energizing. (1) share.google/ms1wKDQZmgep...
this (unfortunately) has it all — large exec salaries in public media while reporters struggle to make ends meet, cancelling impactful investigative podcasts, cracks in firewall between newsroom and business, and a top-down pivot to video www.thewesternedge.media/p/i-had-a-dr...
we need to talk about that Ring Super Bowl ad
NEW: ICE has a plan to lease offices across the US as part of a secret, months-long expansion campaign.
Today, @wired.com is publishing dozens of those locations. Many are near schools, medical offices, and places of worship.
Vital work from @leahfeiger.bsky.social that I'm proud to publish.
I am usually a very behind the scenes person but I stepped outside of my comfort zone because I hope reading this will inspire other people just to step up and do the thing.
You never know what your impact can be.
Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich
Citing fear of ICE, pregnant immigrants in Minnesota are
-skipping prenatal care
-requesting home births, even when not medically advised
-going w/o adequate food
Many are experiencing complications providers say can be stress-onset: diabetes, high blood pressure, and even water breaking early
people are always like “what link do i give to?!”
one giant pile of money is actually not a great way to help people. people choosing a variety of places to give helps keep the money moving. no one org gets flooded to the point of breaking.
a PTA, the mutual aid venmo, can move $ even faster.
A Minnesota woman observing ICE agents in her car was cornered on one-way streets. An agent approached, called her by name—citing facial recognition. Days later, her Global Entry and TSA privileges were revoked, with no explanation.
Abolish DHS. If you can imagine a world before Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you can imagine a world without the Department of Homeland Security. My latest at @startribune.com. (gift link)
A reminder that ICE hasn’t slowed down in Minneapolis at all.
Outside of Minnesota, it might feel like everything has changed since Alex Pretti’s murder. But ICE hasn’t actually lost any power and they’re continuing to terrorize our communities.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”
That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

I gave a second interview with the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) about why the right is attempting to shut down NPR and PBS, and how rural station closures will affect democratic discourse. Thanks to the excellent Lucy Schiller.
Interestingly, the best thing from last weekend's SNL is this clip that was cut for time and posted on a Tuesday night: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA8O...
Racket wants to hear from you, Minnesota. We want to hear how the ICE occupation has changed your life, and we want the world outside of Minnesota to know as well.
Hundreds attend the Powderhorn Art Sled Rally in Minneapolis. Feels like -7.
