Imagine meeting your favorite author while sweating knowing they’re gonna get online later and see you explaining their own book back to them like an asshole. The girl in line next to us was trying to make friends with me and was progressively more weirded out as I posted furiously at you
—usually have, but it still comes across as convincing through those bits
I also think that you did accomplish it somewhat through the ending “I thought love took more naps” and your short story. It really strikes you, how gentle and kind Lincoln looks through her eyes, something he doesn’t necessarily perceive in himself. It’s less time together than your couples—
I’ll report back 🫡
It’s a coming of age story at 29. (Because we never stop becoming) That’s rare. It’s a story to be treasured, I think. (:
I’m glad I gave you a different perspective on the book. As a reader it doesn’t feel undeserved. And believe it or not it feels romantic too. When he finally meets Beth, it’s like we leave his head, even though we don’t, and we have already fallen in love with him, so why can’t Beth?
And then you said I was less raucous in person and I was like “well…. I got it out of my system 15 minutes ago on bsky and by yelling HOW COULD SHE SAY THAT at clev…”
Anyway. It was very funny because you said that and I had to stop myself from standing up and arguing with you bc that’s rude and insane, and then I was like I’ll give her a what for at the table! And then you said you had to leave by 5. And so I ranted at you on bsky
You have a tendency, as every writer does obviously, to touch back on subjects or scenes in subsequent stories. They’re different every time, but they’re played in the same chord, maybe they have similar notes. It adds a layer of satisfaction to reading your stories, and a sense of humanity I love
If cherry baby also follows this format I’m gonna absolutely lose my gourd. I’m already ripping out my spleen over it and I’m only on chapter 21 (I was screaming at you on tumblr over it sorry). And this touches on something else I love about getting to read your books
It was crazy listening to you gently trash talk it! It’s actually my favorite of your books after Simon snow. I reread it every year or so. It’s a book that makes you feel okay about feeling lost
a black and white typography edit that reads "dykes make the day brighter" in all caps. to the right of the text is a pair of linked carabiners. they have two charms on them embossed with the transgender symbol and two interlocking female symbols. there is also a heart shaped lock. the entire image is textured to look photocopied.
happy second day of #lesbianvisibilityweek!
She frightened me into being polite instead of raucous
Yeah he was there
@clevelandy.bsky.social is here too (:
You did this on accident maybe, but it’s still worth saying. I’m sorry for mansplaining your book to you love you hope you get home safe
It’s a story about rediscovering yourself, and through that Lincoln is falling in love with life again. Beth IS someone who is actually living life in a way he envies. All of it is Lincoln finding himself. We love Lincoln. Through us Beth can love him.
The thing about it, when I first read attachments I was sitting there like “why aren’t they interacting? This is so weird for a rainbow book” but then I sat with it and I finished it and I realized it’s not a romance between Beth and Lincoln, it’s a romance between you, the reader, and Lincoln
@rainbowrowell.bsky.social I’m sitting waiting to get my book signed and I’m so happy you did this thank you for being here. I disagree with you about attachments being a “fundamentally broken book”

Drawing of Ed and Stede from Our Flag Means Death. They're wearing their simple academy outfits- light linen shirts. Ed is clean shaven. Their arms are around each other and the late afternoon sun is behind them, casting soft golden light. Ed's hand is tangled in Stede's hair at his nape. Stede's arm is around Ed and clutching the back of his shirt. They make each other happy.
So, I reckon what makes Ed happy is... you.
You make Stede happy.
(I never actually put this up myself! Finished adopted sketch thanks to super adored @kellykat53.bsky.social!)

Digital illustration of MerEd and MerStede swimming, forming a circle. There's a lighthouse in the middle and a frame of leaves, shells and skulls outside.
I suddenly had the urge to paint a ceramic trinket dish...unfortunately I only had my tablet, so......... 🫴✨
