Sexual harassment is rife at US Antarctic research bases, fresh survey finds More than two-thirds of people polled had witnessed sexual harassment or assault on the ice.

We've been waiting for this report from NSF for many months — results of a survey on sexual harassment at US Antarctic stations. The numbers aren't good, but at least this problem is out in the open & starting to be tackled. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The importance of long term records from multiple geographical points around the globe cannot be overstated. This is both sad and enraging

Incontrovertible evidence, now, of *police* investigating families supporting their kids with gender affirming healthcare in the UK. For trying to do the best for your child, following best practice in most of the world, here you get a visit from the police.

Thank you, Wes Streeting.

The AI Boom Is Draining Water From the Areas That Need It Most A Bloomberg News analysis finds that roughly two thirds of new data centers built or in development in the US since 2022 are in places with high levels of water stress.

Each time you ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water.

A 🧵on our investigation into how the data centers that power AI are increasingly being built in highly water-stressed places:

We'd urge people not to panic - there will be lots of commentary coming out quickly that is likely to deliberately overstate the impact that this decision is going to have on all trans people's lives. We'll say more as soon as we're able to. Please look out for yourselves and each other today 💗🏳️‍⚧️

To anyone feeling hurt and scared by the supreme court decision today, you are seen, you are cared for, and this changes nothing about your right to live your life in dignity and without discrimination.

I agree, and I also find it slightly patronising to be told 'you'll be fine' reading on a screen. I read on a screen all the time. I also think that if I'm trusted to review a book I should be trusted to say what the best way is for me to do it

This is beautifully written and such a compelling story. I confess that I usually stay away from 'heroic era' Antarctica, but the humanity of these men shines in your story, and shows them as so much more than 'just' their Antarctic story. Brilliant.

What a story! It never fails to amaze me what still remains to be unearthed in archives and what we think are familiar histories

World's sea-ice falls to record low The world's frozen oceans keep the planet cool, but they currently have less ice than ever recorded before.

Sea ice in the Arctic and around Antarctica cool our climate, drive ocean circulation across the planet, and provide a unique habitat for polar ecosystems.

Sea ice amounts have now fallen to their lowest since we started measuring them. This is not good.
