Feeling sorry for the kids next door. At @DESY in Hamburg, toy day is everyday 😎. Stay tuned for some nice gas-clathrate results! #synchrotron #xrays #sciencetoys

A few cycling impressions from last year, mainly filmed from my beloved #Brompton C Line.
Running in situ isothermal crystallisation studies of #zeolites (165°C, 40 bar) at BM01@SNBL @esrf.fr, simultaneously monitoring conductivity, T and P in situ, using our newest sample environment.

Other things are less applicable. While art doesn't care about truth (in a sense of "can this work practically"), science should.
When reading this, the quote of Einstein came to mind: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler".
Here he talks about the little surprises, that often come in moments where no one expects them. Scientists would probably refer to it as "Heureka!".
This is his take on collaboration, for example, and I think it can be transferred 1:1 to science. Barely any great scientific discovery was a one man job. Reaching out and sharing ideas is key to progress.
I have massively enjoyed "The Creative Act" by @rickrubin.bsky.social. Although speaking mostly about art, some of Rick's ideas are highly valuable for other creators like scientists and researchers.

Tracking crystallization processes can be cumbersome, specifically when samples react with the sample environment. In a special setup, enabling in situ 2- and 4-electrode impedance measurements, crystallization effects at electrodes or in the bulk can clearly be distinguished, while at the same time enabling structural characterization with X-ray diffraction.
The paper about our combined X-ray and impedance characterization cell is out!

Last week I presented our new high-pressure impedance / X-ray cell at #IZC2025 in Dalian, China. It combines electrical and structural characterization as well as temperature measurement in a single ul sample volume. Useful to study crystal formation in liquids. More soon in our paper.
The next generation of this cell allows simultaneous in situ X-ray and 4-wire impedance measurements. Prototype running on BM01 @esrfsynchrotron. Stay tuned for more details on the design and results in the field of #zeolite crystallisation. Design by @nikido.bsky.social. @SET_KULeuven
Ever tried performing in situ x-ray studies during hydrothermal crystallization #zeolite , or crystallizing gas hydrates? Our new cell design will facilitate your experiments.

Don't use red and green data lines/surfaces in the same panel please #chemsky. It can be difficult for some colorblind readers to differentiate them. I've accepted (in principle) 2 papers today, and both sets of authors were asked to remove red/green colour contrasts www.nature.com/articles/d41...
