~ 7% global forests is plantation (young)
Young (Y) vs Old forests (O):
How do water + carbon (C) processes belowground differ?
Y: less streamflow & deep gw %
O: higher DOC + DIC; deep roots
Y&O: can have contrasting DOC CQ; consistent DIC dilution

🌟✨New paper: Check out our New Phytologist Tansley review on how changing precipitation patterns (changes in amount, intensity, & frequency of ppt already being observed due to climate change) affect soil organic matter dynamics.

Very excited for this to come out just after presenting it at #AGU25. We show how fine root presence reveals deep root-regolith interactions more accurately than biomass, using root abundance data from 75 soil pits in many ecosystem types.

New research from my group @parched-panama.bsky.social showing that rainforest drying suppresses root growth and biomass in surface soils, while stimulating deep root production! Let us know what you think!

All fantastic colleagues for this project.
We are so excited to share the results of this work! Annalise Guthrie’s hard work demonstrates how the loss and regeneration of deep roots can change the way deep soils are structured at a continental scale. This was such a joy to work on! @agu.org

Excited to see this paper out! We used NEON data to explore the relationship between fine root and soil carbon stocks. With @sr-weino.bsky.social @katerinageorgiou.bsky.social @aaberhe.com @josephtumber.bsky.social @mingzhenlu.bsky.social et al. doi.org/10.1038/s432...
I’m so sorry, Maria! I’m so glad she got to live out her years with such a loving family.
Drawing of the water cycle in a landscape with and without temperature overshoot. Impacts include forest cover, glacial contributions, infrastructure, geomorphology, water use for carbon dioxide removal, groundwater depletion.
New commentary paper out this week with @gruberte.bsky.social and Sara Warix in WRR - we argue that temperature overshoot has consequences for regional hydrology and water resources that bear consideration. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Happy to be in DC for #AGU24! Lots of great talks from my students this week. Starting tomorrow (Monday) - if you're interested in snow ❄️ & fire 🔥 check out @akoshkin.bsky.social at 2:20 in rm 101. agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/me...
So excited for our lab at #AGU Come see Lola Klamm reveal how microbes 🦠 change soil structure and Ksat 💧(B43F-1619) and Rachel Keen explain how preferential flow 🌊 varies across space (H44B-05)! All with Pam Sullivan, Dan Hirmas, Li Li, @hooriajami.bsky.social @hydrolejo.bsky.social et al!
Happy World Soils Day to all! ⛏️🏔️🌲🌳🪨💦🦠😊

You'll work with Pam Sullivan, Kamini Singha, Hoori Ajami, Li Li, Leno Flores, Daniel Hirmas, Jesse Nippert and my labgroup to help understand these interactions across multiple biomes, and you'll have post-doc colleagues at multiple institutions.
We're searching for a post-doc to join our team of scientists at 7 universities! Come join our efforts to investigate how roots, rock, and regolith interact to govern water and carbon flows. tinyurl.com/KU-postdoc
