Mortality Among Patients With Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infections Caused by the M1UK Lineage: A Retrospective Cohort Study in England and Wales Emm1 invasive Strep A incurs a high case fatality rate. In this national cohort, 24.4% of those with M1UK iGAS died, though this was not different from anc

The #StrepA upsurge of 2022/23 was dominated by emm1; the high mortality associated with emm1 is alarming.
What is more alarming is that those who die, sadly die quickly esp children ; blaming any single person for a strep A death is not sensible.

Excited to share our first look at Enterococcus faecium infection biology: diabetic wounds are complex, and E. faecium persists despite early immune responses. In diabetic mice, it shows impaired clearance + sustained neutrophil recruitment, worsening healing.

Definitely worth a read and raises all sorts of questions about how quickly we become vulnerable as a population if we aren’t immune/immunised.👇

Points to a specific but I think meaningful immunity gap against two of the pathogens tested - strep A and RSV in 3-4 y olds. Age specific increment in anti Strep antibodies as you might hope. Just less in those post 2020. Preprint of interest to many of us in @ispylifenetwork.bsky.social

AI mirrors experimental science to uncover a novel mechanism of gene transfer crucial to bacterial evolution AI models have been proposed for hypothesis generation, but testing their ability to drive high-impact research is challenging, since an AI-generated hypothesis can take decades to validate. Here, we ...

With @jrpenades.bsky.social, we challenged Google AI co-scientist to generate hypotheses. In just 2 days, it recapitulated our unpublished, experimentally confirmed mechanism for how cf-PICIs spread between bacterial species! @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social
