The #StrepA upsurge of 2022/23 was dominated by emm1; the high mortality associated with emm1 is alarming.
What is more alarming is that those who die, sadly die quickly esp children ; blaming any single person for a strep A death is not sensible.

Excited to share our first look at Enterococcus faecium infection biology: diabetic wounds are complex, and E. faecium persists despite early immune responses. In diabetic mice, it shows impaired clearance + sustained neutrophil recruitment, worsening healing.
Coming to this a bit late but many congratulations 🎉!Sad can’t order for Christmas-would have bought more!! But looking forward to seeing it
Definitely worth a read and raises all sorts of questions about how quickly we become vulnerable as a population if we aren’t immune/immunised.👇

Academy Fellow Professor Chris Chiu next to a quote that reads: "The challenge of my research can only be addressed by promoting innovative and collaborative research, a central aspect of the Academy’s mission."
Congratulations to Prof @chrischiulab.bsky.social who has been elected as a new Fellow to the Academy 🎉
Prof Chiu is studying protective immunity in human respiratory viral infections. With an urgent need for improved vaccines, this is a critical area of work 💉

Points to a specific but I think meaningful immunity gap against two of the pathogens tested - strep A and RSV in 3-4 y olds. Age specific increment in anti Strep antibodies as you might hope. Just less in those post 2020. Preprint of interest to many of us in @ispylifenetwork.bsky.social

With @jrpenades.bsky.social, we challenged Google AI co-scientist to generate hypotheses. In just 2 days, it recapitulated our unpublished, experimentally confirmed mechanism for how cf-PICIs spread between bacterial species! @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social
