really enjoying reading _The AI Con_ which just came out! "To put it bluntly, 'AI' is a marketing term. It doesn't refer to a coherent set of technologies. Instead, the phrase 'artificial intelligence' is deployed when the people building or selling a particular set of technologies + 1/2

The whole idea of "antiwar" Trump has long rested on a confused reading of his hatred of multilateralism, the international order, and the Deep State. He doesn't hate those things for "dovish" reasons. He hates them for degenerate/corrupt reasons.

Thoughts on that:

Gen-AI moment is like early 2000s when aerial images proliferated but cultural aerial vocab lacked so the state read them for us as pseudo-empirical images. The power that produces such tech paradigms always takes advantage of the novelty period where interpretative lexicons are still developing.

It's like all the tech bros trying to defend AI after ChatGPT lost at chess to an Atari. Their argument is that the Atari is custom built to play chess. And that is the point. LLMs are great at synthesizing data into something that sounds good. But that doesn't mean they can actually do the work

The federal government is telling you they cannot afford to house you, feed you, educate you or heal you — but that they do have enough resources and scale to criminalize, assault, deport and incarcerate your neighbors simply going to work or taking their kids to graduation.

Why Physical Media Deserved To Die Over the course of more than a decade, physical media has gradually vanished from public view. Once computers had an optical drive except for ultrabooks, but these days computer cases that even sup…

At some point in the last 25 years, corporations managed to convince people that it was worthwhile to trade control over our own information and actual ownership of the things we purchase for convenience. Things that used to be "normal" are now seen as "luxury goods" that demand a premium.

NEW: Since 2023, student journalists at Emerson College's student radio station, WECB, have been battling a digital imposter: an AI zombie site using a stolen WECB web domain -- and the station's likeness -- to churn out misinformation-littered AI slop for profit.

everybody gets digital mummies, lifeless nth-order approximations (as are we all), and the most wifeless neckbeards ever will chime in chorus "our consciousnesses have been DIGITALLY UPLOADED, we're gonna live forever maaan" (digital soul lost to data corruption, under/over, 20 years)

Consider the story of Kseniia Petrova, the Russian anti-aging scientist who had her visa revoked for not declaring medical samples that her Harvard lab director had asked her to bring into the United States. America used to recruit such brilliant and dedicated scientists. Now, we give them away at the behest of men like Marco Rubio. She is in a jail cell in Louisiana, worried she will be deported back to Russia, where she had protested its authoritarian leader. Harvard has done little to object. She said:

Even immigrants here, they have to have some rights. But it seems that nobody really cares about our rights here…This is not the kind of America I used to know

US higher ed is:
*an incredible tool of soft power
*which generates billions, subsidizing US students
*attracts the brightest people in the world to come here, and allows the US to retain the best of them
For Rubio & Trump, these are problems to be fixed.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.
