These are just some of our actions so far:
Supporting at‑risk scholars with anonymous submission options, pushing back against censorship, and creating space for learning through #DefendResearch and our work with EveryLibrary. It doesn't stop here though.
Academic freedom doesn’t protect itself.
On reading @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social recent article on 7 actions publishers can take, it sparked some honest reflection on some of the work we've been doing, and where there’s still more to do. It's worth a read, especially for publishers.

From maternal health to food labelling, mental health and everyday food choices, evidence is shaping how we understand nutrition, and how we support healthier decisions.
We’ve pulled together key research for #NHWeek here: bit.ly/4dk3lWY
Nutrition also has a major but overlooked role in mental health. A review of digital interventions for severe mental illness found 90% reported positive behaviour change, yet nutrition was rarely addressed directly. A clear gap for research and practice.
▪️0% of pregnant women in one study met key nutrient needs. Many avoided nutrient‑rich foods due to fear
▪️Front‑of‑pack labels help people choose healthier options, especially when short on time.
▪️And even when people don’t fully understand a label, many still want it because it helps quick decisions

This International Women’s Day, real change starts with what we do next.
#DeedsNotWords
"... Meaningful action is slower, more uncomfortable, and far more political: redistributing power, resourcing equity work year round, confronting perpetrators and cultures of impunity, and redesigning systems so that those most affected actually shape the institution."
- Susan Watson, Uni. of York
“Days like IWD risk letting organisations perform commitment while leaving the underlying machinery of inequality – pay gaps, hostile cultures, exclusionary leadership structures – completely intact..."
"... As Emmeline said so many years ago, we need deeds not words."
Vicky Williams, CEO, Emerald Publishing.
"International Women's Day can't change systems on its own. If it feels the same every year, it's because we've relied on symbolism instead of shifting power, pay, and opportunity. Whilst we support the amplification of issues as part of IWD, real equity shows up in what we do and how we change..."
"... if your gender equity agenda fits neatly into a glossy corporate brochure, it probably isn’t equity at all.” Helena Liu, Bond University, Australia.
“The global economy that celebrates IWD also relies on the exploited labour of women in the Global South, the dispossession of Indigenous lands and communities, and the systemic marginalisation of undocumented, disabled, queer, trans, and non-white people..."
“A single day cannot shift structural inequalities that are embedded in recruitment, promotion, pay or everyday decisions. When organisations rely on symbolic gestures, they avoid the harder work of redistributing power, privilege and resources.” Anne Laure Humber, University of Gothenburg.
If IWD feels the same every year, it’s because not enough is changing.
One day can raise awareness, but it doesn’t shift pay, power or opportunity. That only happens through structural change - in decisions, resources and accountability.
