Stealing this. Not for a joke, but for my standup.

Oh hell yeah. Been meaning to join for a while, and this is the nudge I needed. Congrats to @bencollins.bsky.social on this hard-won victory.

This is like trying to run the ball in on a 4th & 20 with only enough time left for one play, when a field goal would win the game.

Why though? This is an action that requires *THE VICE PRESIDENT* to initiate it, needs 8 of the 15 members of the executive cabinet to agree with him, and then a full 2/3rds vote in both the house and the senate.

Impeachment only needs a simple majority in the house and 2/3rds of the senate.

I will also sometimes break out “bite my shiny metal ass” when warranted.

I mean, I’ll use this one in casual conversation, in the same sense he does.

I mean, that’s great to learn now, but it certainly was not community advice when I first created my account, and I don’t see it obvious when I search for “how to join mastodon” in general-purpose search engines.

And honestly, a federated network where all choices are wrong but one is a farce.

I'm just glad I didn't invest much time in crafting posts over there that are apparently going to just be abandoned and inaccessible.

Migrating from mastodon.cloud to mastodon.social involves creating a new account, exporting data (follows, lists, blocks) from the old account, importing it to the new one, and setting up a redirect. Followers are automatically transferred, but posts and media remain on the old account.
Steps to Migrate:

Create New Account: Sign up on mastodon.social.
Export Data: On mastodon.cloud, go to Settings > Import and export > Data export to download your follows, blocks, etc..
Import Data: On mastodon.social, go to Settings > Import and export > Import and upload the CSV files.
Set Alias (Old to New): On mastodon.cloud, go to Settings > Account > Move to a different account and enter your new mastodon.social handle.
Redirect (New to Old): On mastodon.social, go to Settings > Account > Move from a different account and enter your mastodon.cloud handle to set up the alias.

Crucial Notes:

Posts and media: These cannot be moved and will remain on the mastodon.cloud account.
Followers: The migration process notifies followers to move, but this can take time.
Cooldown: You can only move your followers once every 30 days.
Inform Followers: Post a final post on your old account notifying followers of the move.

Like holy Christ I don't want to have to set aside time to do all this. What the fuck.

"Try Mastodon!"

"Okay, I need to pick a server it says?"

"It doesn't matter much, because they're all federated"

*picks a well-populated general-purpose server*

"No! Wrong choice! Now you have to figure out the arcane 'moving your profile' bullshit and change your identity entirely."

Yeah.

Atproto is federated social media. Point to where this happened with atproto.

Having to do stuff like this is not a normal part of the social media experience and alienates a lot of less IT inclined people.

Mastodon post:

If you or someone you know has an account on mastodon.cloud, I would highly recommend migrating to a new server. Lots of instances are in the process of completely blocking mastodon.cloud which will sever all connections for people on
mastodon.cloud. Mastodon.cloud is effectively abandoned, running very old and out of date software with minimal moderation resulting in a good deal of moderation work for those of us running other instances.
I am posting this in hopes that some people on mastodon.cloud see it and decide to take action.

I love that we're including Chinese New Year and Diwali on here, and am baffled about the proximity-to-Mexico limitation on Cinco de Mayo ("not more than 150 miles from the Texas-Mexico border"). Full list at comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/public...

It's legal to sell fireworks in Texas only on specific designated (holiday-associated) dates, and the list is wild: Independence Day, New Years, Texas Independence Day, San Jacinto Day, Cinco de Mayo (only near Mexico), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Lunar New Year, and Diwali.

I tell you what, as soon as I realized that it's easy to keep everything on hand to throw together a chicken sandwich, it was ... life changing. And I can even upgrade to tater tots at no extra charge. :)

💯Gardenia, honeysuckle, and magnolia flowers are some of the best smells nature has to offer.

I don’t need you unnecessarily telegraphing to me that you’re in a protected class at this point in the process. I simply don’t want the liability. Your physical appearance has nothing to do with your engineering skills, so don’t burden me with having to see and ignore that superfluous information.

4 days ago 10 0 1 0

Is your appearance relevant to the position? E.g., are you a model or performer? Then yes. Otherwise, no: including information not relevant to the position that might influence the selection process is manifestly unprofessional IMHO, and is a huge ding against a candidate when I’m on the hiring end

The term of art is “fiduciary duty”, and the only antidote is regulation. Executive teams and boards need to legitimately be able to say their hands are tied and that they cannot do these things. Otherwise, the law maintains that they must.

Holy crap, I’m stoked. Inherent understanding of stacks and the ability to land multiple layers at once will be a huge simplification of so much of my work.

In a First for the U.S., Renewables Generate More Power Than Natural Gas In March, for the first time, renewables supplied more power to the U.S. than natural gas, a milestone in the transition to clean power. However, rising power demand is complicating the shift away from fossil fuels by extending the lives of many aging coal power plants.

In a first last month, renewables supplied more power to the U.S. than natural gas, a milestone in the shift to clean energy.

That one *did* bite me, in that in bought a JA Henkels nonstick pan at one point on the strength of CR’s recommendation, and it… wasn’t nonstick for very long. Nor was it inexpensive.

And this makes sense: they bring in a brand new thing, see how it performs first thing out of the box, and score it accordingly. This also fails, e.g., for a whole category of nonstick pans that are awesome for the first month or two and then lose their nonstick properties.

No, but only because I check other sources for durability before committing to a large purchase. The most famous example is that Dyson vacuums *dominated* their recommendations for a long time, but are famous for just falling apart after a few years. www.reddit.com/r/dyson/s/RW...

West Country Farmhouse Cheddar is the only cheddar with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, ensuring it is traditionally made in Somerset, Dorset, Devon, or Cornwall, UK, using local milk. It must be matured for at least nine months and produced using traditional farmhouse methods.

There’s no PDO for unqualified “cheddar” as applied to cheese.

I do use them as a starting point (we keep our subscription active), but their methods are singularly bad at evaluating longevity.
