I sympathise. An author I very much like, Andrew Miller, writes interesting, engaging characters to whom unpleasant things happen. Sometimes hard to continue but also sometimes hard to start.
I hear you and send love and sympathy. Childcare was tough when my children were small, but coupled with arranging elderly care, that's got to feel relentless. Hang in there, there can be moments of peace in the gloom.
Yes. But they won't be.
Happy Easter to everyone celebrating in London.
Amid the festivities, let’s remember the message of hope at its heart. No matter the challenges we face, there is always light on the horizon.
Thank you to our Christian communities for helping build a kinder city.
Haven't seen the film yet but didn't enjoy the book very much. Loved The Martian so Project Hail Mary was disappointing.

Happy Easter everyone!

Grape hyacinths are so reliable! I have some in a pot I have shamefully neglected but every spring, there they are.

I Work Very Hard, And I Would Like To Try Cake By A Horse Hello. I am a horse. I work very hard at my job of being a horse. When humans say move the heavy thing, I move the heavy thing. When humans sit on top of me and pull on my head, I carry them where they want to go. The main food the humans give me is hay and oats. But I am thinking it would be nice to have a different food. I am thinking I would like to try cake. Yes, yes. Cake. I know all about it. When humans eat cake, it is in glad times. It is the food for a celebration, such as when a woman becomes 47. I have seen cake on the Fourth of July. When humans have a cake, they stand around it and clap hands and smile and say happy birthday at each other. Sometimes there are beautiful markings on a cake, such as balloons or a pink shape. Sometimes the top of a cake is on fire and a boy must blow on the fire with mouth wind. This is the scariest cake. I do not want this kind. But I will eat any other cake. Any cake that is not the fire cake that tries to kill the boy. Please understand: I do not get money for doing work. I do not get to go inside the house. All I am either doing my horse job or standing in my pen or eating food off the floor. I always do these things. But I have never once gotten cake and I would like it very much. I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children. I am more helpful to the farm. Children do not move the heavy things like me or let anyone ride on them. And yet they get cake. Maybe the humans will realize this. Maybe they will say, "You know who deserves cake? That horse. That horse whose back we are always on." Every day I dream about what it will be like if I get to eat cake. Here is what will happen. First, I will walk to the cake and putt my nose at it like hrrfff to make and stomping my hooves to make sure it is not a snake. Then I will trot in a circle to show that I am a horse and I am large. After that, I will nuzzle the cake to …
The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me.
It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."

An epic day experimenting with glass @butserancientfarm.co.uk A fab PhD project led by Kim Devereux-West @durham.ac.uk with @romanpalace.bsky.social Huge thanks to @chrischivers.bsky.social & co who ensured the furnace survived over winter! Some odd people showed up to help! #CuratorRob 😉
A big clay Roman style glass furnace. on the left is an annealing oven. The chmney is on topand in the side is a gathering hole and tool-warming port. On the right you can see the stoke hole
A replica roman glass furnace. closest to the camera (right of image) is the stoke hole and behind (to the left) is a working port. there is a low chimney in the top. some bags of sand are to the far right. The whole think looks a little weathered but is beautifully intact.
Back home from a couple of day's at #Glass-tonbury: our project @butserancientfarm.co.uk where we hope to make replica roman windows....
Here's the furnace we built last summer as we left it and how we found it yesterday. It survived the Winter pretty well! 🤩👍
Here's how the experiment went...

If you put Boring Talks greenbelt into a search engine of your choice, you will find a short discussion of using quarries and the green belt in Dr Who!
I thought you did very well, they seemed to want to lead you up the garden path but you stuck to what you wanted to say.
An ancient mosaic showing a bear, walking from left to right across a plain white background. The bear's limbs are somewhat elongated and he wears a rather world-weary expression.
It's World Bear Day, so here's a bear who's had it with all this.

Anyone buying a Samsung TV gets GBnews as the default news channel. There is info on removing this on some sites but I'm not sure how many people do this.
Children at an Edinburgh hospital painted pebbles for the penguins at Edinburgh Zoo and will be able to watch them choose and present them to their mates via livestream.

If you have a Samsung TV in the UK, GBNews is the default news channel. Lots of instructions for removing it around the new but GBN probably hopes people won't bother.

I've read the book but can't remember if she ends up with this nice young man. And finds fulfillment through books etc.

An archaeological trench showing various gullys and ditches. Some of these contain runs of short orange ceramic water pipes that fit together not unlike lego to create continuous lengths of pipe.
We're sure all you can think about today is that it's World Plumbing Day. 👨🔧💦
So here's the Palace plumbing - ceramic pipes that carried water around the formal gardens and fed fountains and ornamental basins and the like.
