“Stacey Tanenbaum’s documentary TOUGH OLD BROADS celebrates three trailblazers, who reinforce that change often comes slowly, and is inspired in the unlikeliest places and circumstances.” - Jith Paul

I just read that The Brass Monkey is shutting their doors. The bar was the location for a good portion our film "A Clean Slate" in 2014. I have so many fond memories of this shoot.

Hot take. Joachim Trier: La La Landing the ending of Sentimental Value would have been wild.
A great film. Check it out if you have the opportunity.

To know what it feels like to be forgotten is to understand the value of remembrance. From my heart, thank you. Your sacrifice will never fade.

Looking back, I’m filled with pride. Every time I spot the OCan logo or its specific colour combination, I’m reminded of the history, passion, intention, and pride behind it.

Seeing the festival name that I came up with appearing on a cinema marquee and watching indie films from across Canada projected from the same DCP server housing other major studio releases was beyond my 2011 dreams.

OCan launched in 2015 as a non-profit with partners, held its first screening in 2017, went online for a couple years during the pandemic, and returned to in-person screenings at the ByTowne in 2022.

Moving to independent cinemas was a gamble that paid off—our first Mayfair screening sold out and made that evening’s local television news. But after ten self-funded events, this side-hustle needed to be fuelled by more than one person’s passion to be sustainable.

We would invariably hear “I had no idea people in the city made movies!” at our small public screenings.

The dream began in 2011 with the Treepot Festival. At the time, I was a one of a small group of independent filmmakers who worked on each other’s films using the video feature on our digital still photo cameras.

This photo captures the moment I kicked off OCan24 last November—my final year with the festival, a decision I had quietly shared with the board months earlier.

Here are the results of the photo restoration project I worked on recently. Most of the photos from the engagement and wedding of my parents, Keith and Shelagh, were thankfully in very good shape.

While I am not a big fan of the prequel trilogy (ep 1, 2, 3), I think the teaser poster for The Phantom Menace (1999) is one of the best in the series. Happy Star Wars Day.
