It really says something about @hfxgov.bsky.social priorities when residents have to implement their own #RoadSafety strategies. How quickly they acted to remove this art. Meanwhile, at least 37 people have been killed or injured since this council was elected docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

We are constantly publishing tip of the iceberg; number of pedestrian collisions and deaths. We don't talk enough about the intangible metric of how many of us have had dozens of experiences each, just like this. However brief, however common, they are near death experiences, and they stay with you.
RIP $5 to $7.6 billion in revenue.
One example of a way the federal government could spend that money instead of a gas tax holiday:
This incident could have been avoided by swapping out a car lane with a bus and/or bike lane on Pleasant St.
People get less aggressive when they have no options (ie another lane) to pass.
4 runners seen side by side running down the middle of the road. The road is quiet and safe because it is in a low traffic neighbourhood
Two kids cycling side by side down a quiet road within a low traffic neighbourhood. Other cyclists oncoming in the distance
‘Quality of life’ isn’t a big house, luxury goods or a fancy car. It’s being able to cycle your kids on safe streets or run side by side down peaceful roads with your friends. Everyone can & should have this.
… for me to grab my youngest’s backpack to pull them closer. Then the driver turned behind us & sped away.
I’m so over violent driving like this.

If you are the sort of driver who will use your car as a threat to bully a parent w/ 2 young kids across the crosswalk faster… you shouldn’t have access to a car.
We had a walk sign & were not walking slowly. The driver stared at me impatiently & drove toward us aggressively enough …
This is why we have set up an incident reporting form for near misses and close calls. You can access it here: forms.gle/XGr4do39sW9V... #VisionZero 2/2
"She said this experience has changed how she thinks of road safety as a councillor" - an awful thing to happen to @beckykent.bsky.social. Sadly, this is the everyday reality for people walking, rolling or wheeling in HRM. We need tangible action on #RoadSafety www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/... 1/2
"IDOT wants to give counties, townships and municipalities the ability to lower the default speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour without conducting speed studies that cost roughly $20,000"

We need leadership this in Halifax to try this so bad.
Awareness raising from the Province of Nova Scotia: For crashes occurring at 40 km/h+, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are likely to result in serious injury or death.
Include Government of Nova Scotia's message that vulnerable road users struck at 40 km/h or higher will likely result in serious injury or death.
Given that, 40 km/h should be the maximum permitted speed on urban & suburban arterials.
But this is not legalized

"Slow down" signs provided by MLA's promote them and their contact details.
It's time for more - write your MLA to ask they propose changes in the law that permit slower speeds on our most dangerous roads - particularly those shared with vulnerable road users

Exactly. And Cork is pretty much identical to the “local street bikeway” one street over, (not that any of us couldn’t predict that HRM hasn’t done enough to call Liverpool all ages & abilities. Painting bike symbols on the road isn’t providing infrastructure).
Terrifying. On a neighbourhood street.
Thanks, will try and find out more.
Can you link a source to this for our database?
Just read that this was a person on a bicycle who was injured, not sure the extent of the injuries 😔
BUMP!
Reminder that the Macdonald Bridge will be closed this weekend
So you can expect BIG delays
Plus - The Pedestrian and Bicycle lanes will be closed
But you can get free Transit Tickets from the Admin Building on the Dartmouth side of the Macdonald, near the Pedestrian Walkway #HFXTraffic
Small correction. Reduced emergency response times.
Yes, thanks for clarifying!
A small correction. It reduced emergency response times. The response times of emergency vehicles improved with these changes in Wales. We can do the same. Please follow @visionzerokh.bsky.social
Fully adopting #VisionZero is one of the most cost-effective road safety measures a municipality can implement. Given the fiscal headwinds that @hfxgov.bsky.social is facing, it is not only the fiscally responsible thing to do, it is the most morally responsible approach too #RoadSafety 4/4
Perhaps more comparable to HRM, speed limits implemented in Wales led to fewer crashes, reduced emergency response, and lower healthcare costs which also saved the country money (h/t @willhaycardiff.bsky.social) willhaywardwales.substack.com/p/turns-out-... 3/4
In Brussels, a citywide 30 km/h policy, in force for over 5 years now, reduced average speeds and led to fewer serious crashes without major travel time impact. TL:DR - safer but not slower in terms of journey times www.thebulletin.be/fewer-accide... 2/4
There is a mountain of evidence now that lower speeds save lives & the strongest results come from limits across the board not just on residential streets. We could save money & lives if @hfxgov.bsky.social truly implemented a #VisionZero approach, instead of just talking about it 1/4
It's important to respectfully balance the wishes of drivers who want unimpeded, high-travel and unlimited parking anywhere against other road users who want to not be killed or injured by drivers.
If anyone can find a weaker road safety goal than ours, I'd be interested to see it
