He used mass media in a way no “Pop” artist had before. Until him, pop was about the void of pop-culture staring back at us. Haring used consumerism to spread awareness and champion causes. He put politics into the vacuum. There's no pretense to the ecstatic love for people in his work.

When I was 17 I made myself a “CGH” hat with stencils and bleach. Lost it in Tompkins Sq. park lol. I idolized him. Despite his friendly cartoon rep, Kieth Haring at heart was an angry agit-prop artist. I love his early experiments with street art stencils and wheatpastes as much as his drawings.
