Extremely cool.
We haven’t known very much about how localized neuromodulator signaling is.
This data — made possible by new molecular sensor tools — is revealing that it’s quite local, just a few cell-widths in extent.

Cosyne 2026 - Cosyne Tutorial: Comparative Analysis of Neural Population Codes
Cosyne 2026 - Cosyne Tutorial: Comparative Analysis of Neural Population Codes YouTube video by Cosyne Talks

Cosyne invited me to give a long tutorial (4 hours!) on methods to quantify differences high-d neural recordings across animals, brain regions, deep neural nets, etc.

The recording is up on youtube. I hope it inspires more research on this fundamental topic!

I do want to make sure we're being clear about this:

The Bluesky team maintains the same review, red-teaming, and QA processes that we always have. AI coding tools have been proving useful, but haven't changed the fundamental practices of good engineering. Human review and direction remain key.

A neuromodulatory circuit-to-molecular pathway for reformatting aversive memories during recall Tan et al. identify a neuromodulatory circuit-to-molecular pathway in rats that updates aversive memories when they are recalled. Excited to share our new paper:
We uncover a locus coeruleus→amygdala circuit linking β-adrenergic signaling to transcription regulation in defined amygdala cells during memory reconsolidation—+ stress or elevated noradrenergic signaling at recall can strengthen memory.

Potentiation of active locomotor state by spinal-projecting serotonergic neurons Fenstermacher et al. map the structure and activity of spinal-projecting serotonergic neurons and show that 5-HT populations are engaged in a context-dependent manner during locomotion. Activation of ventrally projecting 5-HT neurons enhances the speed and endurance of ongoing locomotion, revealing serotonergic neurons can potentiate motor output over extended time scales.
