Don't Be A Jerk. Yup. That's the title.

Newsflash! A surprising principle in being a person and being a doctor overlaps: don’t be a jerk.

It’s so simple! Try it! 🤣

Blaming others (patients, staff, anyone but ourselves) has become a norm. Join me to reject it together (by subscribing 😅)!

How To Save A Life hint: it's NOT by following the rules

THIS is how I feel about medical insurance’s cost-cutting strategies and their dictation of patient outcomes: they put profit margins above people, costing what truly matters—dignity and lives. For anyone who’s seen the consequences, it’s impossible to forget.

Not to brag but I had a 100-year-old great-great-grandmother in my clinic who taught me some killer Salsa moves. It was basically like being blessed by the Pop himself. 💃✨

What are some signs that make it apparent that they dislike your expert use of medical language?

The "Ungrateful" Patient for whom I am grateful

“I must sound so ungrateful,” a father said. Where patients usually say “thank you," he said: help me understand why no one listens to us? The “ungrateful” patient taught me: Patients don’t owe us gratitude. We owe them the truth. And the willingness to listen.

My mom told me to put my books down and get out more, so I backpacked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and stayed outside for four days… to read in peace. She’s right! Fresh air really enhances the plot twists—highly recommend getting out and reading! 🤣

To make a teenage patient less nervous during a biopsy I sang APT.. She giggled the whole time and then said:

“Your singing hurt more than the needle.”

My patients are savages and I love them. 🤣🤣

I, for one, am tired of the news headlines that boil down to “He denies raping a woman.” 😴 Wake me up when there is a story where he:

Admits his fault,

Apologizes for his behavior,

Accepts accountability, and

Amends his wrong by becoming the biggest feminist.

Until then, spare me.

Thank you.

“Eczema is preventing my baby from…being a baby!” A mother said. It’s true! If a kid can’t sleep/eat/laugh because they scratch all day, they aren’t free to just be a kid! I’m gonna write letters to insurance companies that read: how about you approve the meds so our children can just be children?!😡

I trekked 45 miles over 2600 ft, climbed ladders on cliffs, crossed waters: all for the stunning waterfalls in the Grand Canyon. The people of Havasupai, thank you for letting me to your home. Your land is a masterpiece of nature. I’m humbled to have walked its trails and stood in awe of its beauty.

“I don’t feel qualified to tell people to ‘manage your stress,’” I said in my lecture. “Adulting is hard. And I’m not an expert on adulting.”🤣

While people laughed, I hope the point is clear: it’s not helpful to tell patients to be “less stressed.” It is helpful, however, to treat their diseases.

7 years ago, I sat in the auditorium as a resident, learning Dermoscopy for the first time in the AAFP skin course. In the past few days, I joined my mentors as a faculty/speaker for the same course. I’m full of gratitude. I know I’ve got a long way to go. But I will also take the small wins. 🥹🩵
